Well, I've always enjoyed taking off as much emission crap as possible on my vehicles... until now. I have always jumped at the chance to take off stuff like my Catalytic Converter, Charcoal Canister, and EGR. Less parts means less weight. Less weight means it goes faster, right?... Right? :D

But, now I'm kinda backed into a corner. I now live in the Dallas area where the "think-tank of infinite wisdom" law makers have decided to impose strict emission testing for multiple counties surrounding Dallas. I'm now required to have my EGR, Catalytic Converter, Air Pump (smog pump), emission lines, EGR sylenoid, and Charcoal Canister or else I won't pass inspection. Texas is funny in that when your car/truck is 25 year or older you no longer have to pass emission inspection, but you DO have to have the emission parts installed.

Does anyone have experience in making a 25 year old truck emission legal in a scenario like this? I really would appreciate any help you guys (or gals) could send my way. I now driving around with an expired inspection sticker until I can pass the inspection. :doah:

Thank God for emission controls! They have made life so much better for everyone in this country. (I think I just vommited a little in my mouth...)

I feel for ya, brother...I sold my house in McKinney this past April and moved to Arkansas where there is No inspection...my 89 would pass emissions, but I got hassled about my headlights being too bright (even with DOT bulbs), I run headers and true duals and a modified air cleaner...I do not miss Dallas/Collin County area even a little bit

I would find a 4x4 "friendly" emission place just outside of the county you live in... they may just pass it without question.

I did this for a few years with my '79 CK5.... lived in Harris county which required emission inspection,,,and had it inspected in the next county over (Fort Bend county) which was not required to test emissions.

The place I went to never raised the hood.....even though it had a 6-71 blower and two 4 barrels sticking thru it. :eek1:

checked all the safety stuff and slapped on the sticker...

im an inspector in galveston county, it is an emissions county, i dont do a whole lot of inspections now days because i usually change oil and we have another guy at my work who is the main inspector. i think vehicle inspection is retarded and hate failing people so i am very lenient. my suggestion is find a good oil change place where the employees are friendly, preferably young, talk to them and tell them before hand what emissions devices you are missing, see if they are cool about it, maybe offer a $20 tip or a case of beer. that always works for me. if you have a check engine light on an OBD2 vehicle or if your '95 or older vehicle wont pass the sniffer its not likely you will get any inspector to break the law for you, unless the they are already one of your best friends.

Texas requires that the vehicle is inspected in the same county that it's registered in...Vendor fraud is automatic $25K fine...you won't find many willing to take the risk.

As far as I know since you fall into the saftey only inspection now they won't look for any emissions stuff.

I have a friend that does inspections I can ask him if you really need to have all that stuff. My understanding is at 25yrs old it just has to pass a safety inspection too.

If we need emission stuff on them still, I'm screwed know.:haha::haha:

We only have safety inspections on vehicles 25 years old or older and I'm pretty sure our emmisions tests are the same as Tarrant and Dallas county since we border Tarrant County. One other way around this would be to get an antique tag for the truck, less frequent registration and no annual inspection.

Texas may require that the vehicle is inspected in the county its registered in but that really only matters when changing a title over to another name or registering from out of state. you will have to show proof that it was inspected in the county you are trying to get it registered in, even if the current inspection sticker is an emissions sticker and still good. other than that the county never asks for proof of where it was inspected, and unless the inspector looks at your current registration sticker, which is not part of the inspection, they would never know what county your vehicle is registered. and im not sure where you got that automatic $25k fine from, i remember from the inspectors certification class/tests the largest fine was $5000 and/or jail and that i believe was for falsifying emissions tests.

I do know that the license sticker has your county printed on it.

inspection on '86 K5

to P-wagon:

I'd call a few inspection places before I go through all the trouble of putting the emissions stuff back on. I've never had an issue getting an older vehicle to pass the safty-only inpsection. Never had them even pop the hood - just checked brakes, lights and horn. No bribes, no shady inspection places. To the best of my knowledge, there's no visual emissions check required regardless of what county you're in.
Also, I'm in Richardson and have had several different vehicles inspected in both Dallas and Rockwall counties. All of the vehicles were registered in Dallas county - no issues getting them inspected in Rockwall. :dunno:

Having said all that, I just recently traded one '86 K5 for another '86 K5. My "new" '86 has ZERO emissions equipment and was registered and inspected in Rockwall just a few months before I bought it.

HTH.
