Pull and save....
Greetings fellow K5 enthusiasts. Snow is starting to melt here in the front range and I'm chomping at the bit to get this thing ready to wheel again.

I promised a build thread with pictures so here it is. I bought this burb off craigslist for $800 about 1.5 yrs ago. I didn't have much time/cash to put into it right off as I planned on using it as a daily driver. I did a basic 4" lift with front springs, steering arm, and rear blocks. Over the last year and a half my 350/SM465/208 is getting tired, I hate the way it rides with the rear blocks, and I blew my corp 10 bolt rear end recently. So I parked it.

The plan is to spend as little as I can, without skimping, to get my truck going again while still providing some much needed imporvements. I'll be using my ninja junkyard skills for sure....

Enter the master plan:

$600 78' c20 4x2 3/4 ton donor truck w/454/TH400 (for sale once pulled!)

I plan on doing the following mods over the next few months.

swap in the 14 bolt FF (matches my ratio 3.73, may re-gear later on)
Including the 56" 9 leaf pack spring.

Remove the front rear spring brackets from the c20 to use in the rear posititon on the burb for a cheap shackle flip. GOODBYE BLOCKS!

And finally Swap the front 10 bolt to 8-lug. $60 (parts yard)

After the 3/4 ton and 8-lug axle conversion I would eventually like to swap in the 52" stock rears into the front.....but one thing at a time.

I think I'll stop there as the next phase is the 454 swap. Still debating the logistics as I want to have a drivable vehicle in the mean time. Most likely I'll get the burb going with the suspension upgrades and pull the 454 and throw it on a stand to be gone through. Big day tomorrow.......!

Here are some updated pictures at the end of day 2.

As you can tell I don't have the best workspace so I want to bang this out quick. I'm using my girlfriends garage/driveway and it's not so level. Trying to be as safe as I can without being sketched out.....

Rear axle out end of night one. Didn't really get started until 4pm in the afternoon. Not bad time with sh** tools and workspace...it's about 830pm here.

And the next day!

14 vs. 10 bolt? I think we have a winner.....

Here you can see the rear spring mount removed

the passenger side. I have yet to remove the bottom brace. I was going to mock it up and see if I could move it back and use it as a brace or something.

This is one of the front mounts on the C20 that will be used in the rear position on the burb. I was able to get at the rivets near the gas tank by grinding off the very bottom one, sawzall on the 2nd one up, and drill/cold chisel on the backside of the top one. Thanks to the posts here on how to remove rivets I didn't really have too much trouble.

I'm curious how much lift I can achieve in the rear with this bracket and the stock shackle. I'm hoping I can get over 4" but I have to see how much bracket comes in contact with the frame to achieve it. I can always box it in and reinforce the backside I suppose.

Thats it for day .5 and day 2......hope to finish the rear suspension mockup and bolt in tomorrow. Brake bleed and a few other loose ends and the burb should be driveable again. Friday I'll switch over the front to 8 lug with new bearings/seals/etc and the premium warn hubs I got for $15 at the yard. And then the caliper grind......:doah:

More pictures....I'm happy with the shackle angle. Of course the tank had to come out. tomorrow I'm going to bolt in some braces behind the rear shackle mount and maybe get the front started.

Yeah the bolts are holding it in for mock up purposes only. I wanted to put the weight on the springs so I could see what my pinion angle and net lift looked like. Seems like it will be pretty close to what I wanted. Next step is to weld in the reinforcements.

One thing I did notice: The rancho 9000 shock I have will not fit on the drivers side. The gas charged tube portion hits the axle. I think this is due to my pinion being rotated slightly and moving the mount under the axle too far. shim time!

Flip the shock over. Run the body high. You can flip 9000's over and they still work correctly.

Sweet, thanks for the tip. I have it that way for the mock up and I was wondering if that was cool or not. I know they are positive pressure shocks so I didn't think it would be a big deal. Thanks!

It's been a little while, been busy with school and everything else..... I got everything done with the suspension that I had planned. In no particular order.....
