I have an 87 blazer k5 350 tbi and need to replace the head and intake gaskets... Was wondering how hard it would be to replace? About time and price estimates? trying to see what im getting in to... Thanks guys

Hey Iced,

My 85 Blazer had a bad head gasket as well, but it was a 305. I figured it would be cheaper to buy a used donor motor on CL and swap it in, which I did. I was able to get a long block crate 350 with 20k on it for $250.
Swapped everything over from the 305 and it runs great.
A used motor with lower miles may be a better route too if you have high miles on that 350.
But, I also have access to a cherry picker, power tools and such.

I was quoted about $300-400 for the head gasket to be replaced.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck.:wink1:

It'll take the better part of a day to get it torn down and put back together, sometimes longer(I would know:doah:). It's not too hard as long as you have a torque wrench for the head and intake bolts. I know FelPro upper engine gasket set will run about $50, you might be able to get just the head and intake gaskets separate for less.

not a bad job as long as your a semi compitent mechanic, like said before, a good full days job, also a good way to see what shape your internals are in. if you plan on keeping the motor, i would tackle the labor yourself and spend some of the money on parts, like valve stem seals while the heads are off and maybe a valvejob, will make a world of difference having good heads on your motor. just my $.02.

PS. i PM'ed ya about the tailgate, let me know if ur still interested and well work somethin out

If you're a "might as well while I'm here" kinda guy like me, it might be cheaper to farm out the job. I had a bad head gasket on my 86 F-250 and it only cost me $2000 and a rebuilt 460 when all was said and done!

I second that! When the heads and intake are off, the lifters are just right there, you could pull a couple, and make sure your cam is okay, you can also see what kinda shape the cylinders are in, see if you have a crazy lip or not.

As far as price, if they are iron heads, should be under $100, your just buying gaskets.
But, I would reccomend taking the heads to a machine shop, and having them check the valve seats, guides, and seals.
