hi all just got my hands on a 87 suburban with a 6 inch lift and putting 36 tsl radials on it... But have some question and was hoping that this would be a good place to start...

How to tell what gears are in it??
What are the advanages to the TBI?
Should I convert to a carb??
Would like to add a spare tire swing out on the rear any sugestions other than fabing one??

Any Help would be great
Bobby

You can tell the gears by checking the axel tag its usually bolted to one of the diff covers. If not you will need to pull one of the covers and get the number of teeth off the pinion and ring gear.
The advantages of TBI are easy starting and that it will runn at any angle off road. I think that unless you are planing on radicaly modifying the engine than you should stick with the tbi. The systems can be modified to make good horsepower. And as far as the tire carryer im not to sure other than making your own. Hope this helps

The codes on the glovebox sticker are the best way to find out the ratio without getting your hands dirty. The relevant codes start with 'G'. GM products tend not to have axle tags... unless its a Dana axle.

Wanted to say thanks to the 2 that sent me in the right direction...

Here is what the Glove box had
GQ1
GU6
G80

Thanks Again
Bobby

After a few minutes on the Net here is what I found
GQ1 : AXLE, STD RATIO
GU6 : AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO
G80 : AXLE POSITRACTION, LIMITED SLIP

found it on http://www.thirdgen.org/cgi-bin/rpo/index
