to day i was driving my blazer and started to notice trans fluid smell and my engine temp went up
and now overdrive is acting up it will drive but if i let off the gas it free wheels
i picked up a 4L60E from a freind thay was going to the scrap yard thinking it was another 700r4 bu its not
after getting it out i noticed the plug was bigger
im guessing i cannot use this trans
unless there is a convertion plug or something
the 4l60e was rebuilt a couple years ago

Two different animals. Your 700r4 uses a TV cable and the harness going to it controls torque converter lock up. A 4l60e is a 100% electronically controlled transmission via a computer.

Have you checked your TV cable? It could be something as simple as it snapped or came unhooked going into the trans or at the throttle body. Check it out.

No I have not
Thanks
It does shift fine if I keep it out of over drive. But did just happen after I was getting back on to a highway and floored it to get up to traffic speed so that kinda makes sense
How could I check it
Do I just take it off the throttle body and see if it Pulls out

Just reach in there to where it attaches to the throttle body near the throttle cable and see if there's tension on it. If it's sagging you have problems. It should pluck like a guitar string. :)

And if it does end up being OD is out, and you want a rebuild don't be discouraged, that has lasted 25 years, it's about due. A rebuild with upgraded modern components and you'll get another 25+ years out of it. They're good trans, no matter what some might tell you :waytogo: It's more costly than a 350 or 400, probably around $1700-1900.

I'd imagine if the TV cable had issues he'd be having funky shifting problems in all gears.

Out of curiosity what's your axle gearing and tire size.

Well 35s with 410 should be fine. Just wondering, a lot of guys put 35s+ on 308/342/373 gearing and wonder why they burn up their 700r4 :dunno:

I guess check the tv like Avery said and go from there. You have any hard/soft/late/early shifting issues from 1-3rd?

Soft and late it seems
Now the more I think of it

Soft and late mixed with hot/burnt ATF smell no bueno. If the tv cable is out of adjustment, and you caught it early you may be ok. The more you drive on it with an out of adjusted cable, the more it's guaranteed to go. If you can adjust it, and it seems to run just fine afterwards, do a fluid/filter change.

I'd take the cable out of the trans, make sure it's not damaged in any kind of way, put it back and do the adjustment, and go from there.

I wouldn't take it out. It can be a bit of a PITA depending on what junk you have running next to the trans. If it was broken/unhooked down at the trans you'd know it because you would be able to pull it out a bunch up at the throttle body.
Just check it there.

It's just one 10mm bolt  But yeah, trans cooler lines, exhaust pipe...etc. Sometimes it can be a pain, especially hooking it back on, bolting it back on, insuring it is infact still hooked after it's bolted back on. :D But ya, you can tug on it and tell that it's hooked up.

just got time to check out the trans
i checked the TV cable at full throttle and it seems fine so i decided to drive it and it drove fine like nothing happened
so i bought a new cable and i was going to change the fluid and filter
what do you guys think

All you can do is try. Mine decided to act up last week. So I just changed my fluid filter yesterday. Didn't seem bad at all, hoping the filter was clogged. I'll be checking my tv cable today and take it for a spin.
