87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

Every one who goes votes on the coolest, well built, most innovative truck, the winner gets an award named after Jason and given in his honor. The next year they get to bring it back.

that'd be a real honor, I was always jealous of Jason's work...

I'm just glad some people are digging my approach to projects...I try to be innovative and fearless in what I take on.... hope that helps somebody along the way... :wink1:

Ryoken's Next Shopping List

1 - tube.... 40' of 2"...... 20' of 1.5"

2 - gal of 2K primer

3 - composite..... 2 4' x 8' sheets of 3/16 or 1/4"

4 - clocking ring

5 - frame tie-in's

6 - seat belts

7 - 56" springs

8 - x-over

yada, yada....

started bending up the center console last night.... giggling like a little schoolgirl... :haha:

also bent up my "oh sh*t" handles... :eek1:

With as much as you have invested in this project, I think once it is 'done' you could probably make it out here to run Moab.

Very nice work Paul, as always!

ok, early morning, build ramblings.... no pics till the weekend... :p:

So, down in the garage at 4 am this morn..... :eek1: just listening to tunes, injecting caffeine and constempating the build..... :wink1:

I've gotta say, if I can pull off this console the way I'd like to, I'll be fired up.... looking at the initial bars and concept of it all, I'm convinced it'll make all the other mods to the truck boring....

one of those, someone opens the door to get in and goes "holy sh*t" kinda things....

the downside of this mornings revelations was realizing the STUPID amount of labor I have to do still..... :doah::crazy::(:haha:

It is a never ending process my friend. I am hoping that I can finally get Krusty's alternator pivot bolt drilled out and tapped, so I can start running her again. Then I just have a few other things that need to be done in less than two months, so I can be ready for the deer hunt. Just little things, like getting a front driveline in so that 4x4 actually works when I need it.

oh, you know the plans.... it'lll be 5 yrs before it's "done".. and by then i'll be replacing/upgrading stuff that I've done already... :doah: that second phase, 383 megasquirt, comp/LCD, etc will be another huge gig..

it's been fun turning the "creative dogs loose" over the last 15 months tho as opposed to the "sh*t, I need to get to work monday" stuff...

just wish I had the cash to feed em! :doah::crazy::haha:

lookin good man.on a side note,do you know a guy that works for sweenies construction.i swear he had the same setup as you on your white truck.i was down in asbury park yesterday is why i ask.looked like 6 to 8 inch lift and 38s pulling a trailer and the truck had sweenies construction on it i believe thats the way it was spelled.

thats weird... I don't know anything truck related to a sweenie... but I'd swear we have a boat customer or something at our marina with the name Sweenie construction... maybe we contract to them or something....

i honestly don't see a lot of decent lifted trucks around here.. everything is something new, with a bunch of money thrown at it, or some POS on 1/2 tons...

i do know a few , more project-like, trail-only rigs in the area... red shortbed on rocks, etc...

Yeah I know all about the sh*t I need to be to work thing, that's why we bought the Safari when Krusty died. Now we have one fairly new, reliable vehicle. Soon Krusty will be mobile again, then I can focus on getting the Astro on the road again. Then it will be used to save miles on the Safari, and to ensure that we have at least two running vehicles.

It was also a big factor in moving out of our apartment, into the house. Now I have a fully enclosed space to work on my junk.

what do you guys think of the grab handle? :ears:

it's 1" round stock.... I may shorten it up just a bit, the ends still need to be fitted for the main tube.. that A-pillar tube will be black padded....

gotta love shrinkwrap tape! :haha:

I think it would work, but how much lift and how large are the tires you are planning on running? You may want it a bit lower for easier use when climbing in, at least that's my feeling. It looks good there, but unless the only purpose is something to grab while wheeling, it won't work well with a lot of height.

yeah, i want it in the corner.. trying to carry over that same "feel" from the side seat bars...

thats the other reason I like it pretty far down the a-tube is I think it'll be perfect for most people to get in the truck.... a 5' girl might have trouble reaching it, but that's what I'm there for!

but for most average passengers, and me, I think it'll be perfect for getting in the truck.... I expect the truck to sit a tad lower than it's blocked now... 6"s of lift, 7" if you wanna throw in for the tons...

Ok, in that case it might be just about right. I was just concerned, far too many people here on the board running 40's or more and that would put them pretty high up there for reaching when trying to climb in.

I do like the style, they really fit with the overall design of the cage.:waytogo:

cool... I thought it was a pretty good design, obviously head smacking was a prime consideration... I think I was able to maintain a style and keep that in mind..

and yeah, I'm trying to keep the truck pretty low... their definitely there more for ease of entry, but I'm sure the truck'll see some "oh sh*t" moments as well....

Climbing in to the passenger side with a single grab handle is always a bit awkward....

It might be worth thinking about adding a second handle in the b-pillar area so people can pull themselves up with both hands.

For whatever reason, getting into the driver's seat (using the steering wheel as the grab handle) is always much easier to do. Maybe just because I'm right-handed?? :dunno:

:usaflag:

my thinking as of now, is to use the upper, side seat bar as a secondary grab point...

Ill see how that plays out when it's back on the road...

The PO of my truck was good at using the steering wheel too - he went through two steering colunms. :doah:

He used the seat for a grab handle as well, and now the seat mounts are all cracked. :o
