87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

It seems easier, but there is very limited space under there for the dual mufflers. That's the main reason I went with a single out, opened up the room under there a little. Sorry I didn't get to pics last weekend, family things kept coming up and I didn't even get under Krusty. I will this week though.

I really like my Thorley tri-y headers. I got the ceramic coated ones and they have held up very well for the last 3 years or so. I ran dual exhaust, not single though.

I've been thinking of trying the ceramic coated ones but bit hesitant. How's the quality and do I need to go for the best brand for durability? Thanks.

I can't complain about the quality at all for the Thorleys. I've had them off and on a few times now and have scratched the headers on the frame when I did. There are some slightly visible scratches now, but not all the way through the coating. I don't know about the quality of cheaper brands of coated headers, but IMHO these are definitely worth the premium over a previous set of uncoated hedman headers I had on another car.

The coating is a must have. Engine bay temps are radically lower vs uncoated headers.

Look for flange thickness, tube thickness, also the Thorleys have a welded ring at each port to help get a good seal.

I didn't get the chromed coating, mine are matte so the mud has dried on where I've splashed it on and so the headers now seem to have a tan colored coating.

My ceramics are also kind of a tan color due to mud, but a little scrubbing with simple green seemed to take it out and return the silver ceramic color.

it kinda sucks having the smog nazis to think about when you go for inspection.at least in pa you go to a local shop for inspection, not a cop at the inspection station.single 3 inch would equal the flow of dual 2.5 and i do believe if it came stock with a single it would have to stay single, but the cop would have to know if yours came that way or not.most trucks as old as yours doesnt have he original sticker to say what came stock on it.with all the other mods you are doing,i hope they dont flag it for a complete exhaust rebuild also.i would think having true duals with a 2 cats instead of one would make for a better flow and extra burn of the unused gases in the system.you should definitely do some recearch before you make a decision on it.

yeah, my exhaust guy will point me down the right path.... he's won all kinds of awards, etc... I'll have to stop in and bs with him... I'd like to see about going stainless on all the pipe, etc.. when the time comes i'll have my towing buddy that i sold my chevelle to, bring it down there...

well, now I'm looking at a slight design change again... :doah::crazy:

just started mocking up for the side bushings, looked at it, and am now inclined to not use them.. do a hard bolt setup... it'll be much easier to fab for one...

two, it'll give me a hard mounted x-member back by the transfer case for a future antiwrap setup... i still would have mounted to it even if it had the bushings, but i feel better about mounting to a fixed x-member...

the bushings would be trick, but now that i did actual poly mounts at the adapter, and another back at the t-case soon, that would make a total of 7 soft mounts.. granted the 4 outers would be pretty stiff, but i just think it'd be excessive...

the bad about this revelation...

1 - 4 bushings bought for no real purpose at this point... i already have a pair of kert's for the swingdown tire carrier.. no big, i'll find a purpose for em, or sell em..

2 - the 4 hunks of 2 x 3 i got have no purpose now either.. and i'll have to go out to my buds and get some 2 1/2" square to replace em.... once again, not a huge deal, i don't mind having steel kicking around...

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

it seems finding 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 1/4" tube is a problem.... my welder bud only stocks 3/16th's.....

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :(

i was hoping i could order it thru mcmaster, but apparently they don't carry anything thicker than 1/8..... i really don't feel like calling all kinds of local welders to see who has a 4' hunk around, but i may have to...

i've become so reliant on my welder friend, he usually has what i need... it's really the route i wanna take, so some phone calls may be in order next week.... unless i can come up with some brainstorm while milling about the dungeon this weekend..:doah::haha:

sweet

i'll put an order in monday.. hopefully shippings not crazy for a 48" hunk...

thank ya sir :D

have you ever been to fazzios? they stock just about everything you could want metal wise. the one in glassboro is HUGE. they even use steel plate for driveways through the yard! there's also on up in wall twp. closer to you.

and to answer your question, yes my blazer was originally a 2 into 1 exhaust. i've never heard of any problems w/ duals as long as there's cats.

yeah, i forgot about fazio's place out in wall, it's on the circle iirc.... i get much better prices thru my welder guy so i never use him... maybe that'll be the 1 call i make next week, thats not a bad ride... maybe i'll pick up that last 1/2 stick of 2" DOM i want/need for my back bumper build too... i've been avoiding having my maryland co deliver it just for 1 stick...

thanks!

I have a question too for my more metal savvy brothers.....

is there some sort of standard to how radius'd the corners are to square tube, angle, etc?

are some sources more "square" in the corners than others?

I haven't seen a difference when comparing different size tubing in the same guage. The thinner the guage the more square the corners tho. Just my experience.

Bruiser

Typically, the thicker the tubing, the bigger the radius of the corner. It's a function of the tube thickness. A 1/4" thick wall will have a 1/8" radius on the inside of the corner & 1/4" radius on the outside. 3/16" thick wall tube have a 3/16" radius on the outside & 3/32" radius on the inside.

The material doesn't get thinner in the corners, but stretches on the outside & compresses on the inside.

Hope that helps,

Later,
Buddy
