87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

soooooo...... just a little build/day in the life kinda post....

didn't touch the truck today on my day off.... I'm just blown out... had no desire to fab.... :(

so, other than laying around on the couch, I went down and cleaned up a bit and sorted bolts, screws, washers, etc for a couple hrs....

right now I have 10 3 lb coffee containers sorted out... need to sort some of those down into smaller categories, but it's getting there! :haha:

the other thing I decided today while milling about the dungeon was, as of this point, I am HIGHLY motivated to get a new compressor... TOP PURCHASING PRIORITY...

as far as that goes, I was resolved to get the $875 IR unit...

but.... I've decided I really, really, really wanna step up to a reciprocating Quincy if I can swing it.... it's almost double the money at $1500.. the long life, low noise aspect of it REALLY appeals to me.. made in the USA makes me happy too..

it's gonna be a minimum of 3 weeks, if not 5 before I can afford either.... but it needs to be done..... not being able to run die grinders, my air DA, etc is just killing my progress.... plus I need to be spraying soon, etc...

good thing I've been trying to pay down my debt lately..... :haha:

those definitely look like 12's to me... mine are 10's.. but technically i think mine are called, and measure 9.75 according to Weld, etc...

Thanks. I wasn't going to go higher than a 35" but if they are 12's I may just go to a 37

still need to "cap" the inside of the angle down one... 1/2" grade 8 bolt... everything is 1/4", including the end caps...

next is fitting up the backing plate... hopefully that goes a little quicker..... i don't even wanna tell ya how long it took me to do whats pictured... because the frame angles at that point, it was tedious as all he!! fitting up that angled down one...

but it came out exactly how i wanted.... :D

now i just have to repeat this 3 more times... doh! :doah::crazy::haha:

I could do that in 20-40 minutes.:surepal:
Yea right more like all day after farrking up several times. :haha::haha:

Looks good, can't wait to see the rest.:waytogo:

drove me nuts... one of those measure 6 times, cut oversized, shave down as needed, yada, yada.... my kingdom for my plasma right now... thats all being done with my chopsaw, cutoff wheel on an electric die grinder (which i just fubared the arbor on now) and my belt sander...

got new consumables coming in for the plasma this week.. so if need be, i'll bring the "not so portable, portable compressor home over the weekend... gonna be nearly a month till i have the new compressor in the shop...

it's the design i had in my head, and about as stout a setup as i could come up with.... just gotta plod thru the rest....

just a note..... the skid plate will be countersunk mounted to tapped holes in the bottom of the 2 x 2.......

I like it Paul, but you are just making me feel bad about how not shiny Krusty is. My trans is sitting on my workbench, fully rebuilt(I sure pray that it is right), and after the pressure washing it still has grease on it. Good thing I am not a pro shop!

You want to head into Utah and get Krusty all fixed up?

I bet I'd really like Utah.... :wink1:

thanks guys, i think it's gonna be a pretty sweet x-member, when it's done... got a couple surprises for the rest of it too... stuff I haven't seen done before..

oh, another sidenote to my local Joysey guys..... when i went out to Fazio's steel in Wall to pick up the 2 1/2" tube, i tried to pick up the last hunk of 2" DOM i need to build my back bumper, and they only carry up to 1.75.... :(

that a very clean crossmember design. I will be shoving that somewhere in my memory banks for future use

Ryoken Im sure you have other places you know of to get that piece of 2" DOM but i ran into a similar problem. The local guy in my town didnt carry my size DOM i needed and told me to go to http://www.speedymetals.com to get it. But you prolly either already heard of that sight and or have somewhere else you can get the tube :wink1:
Looking good btw!

thanks.... :D Slabberbar turned me on to that place awhile back, haven't used em yet, but looks like a good place to use in a pinch...

98% of the time my welder friend stocks whatever I need in strip steel, square tube, angle, etc.. but he doesn't play with round tube anymore, only pipe...

someone turned me on to Marmon Keystone out of Maryland awhile back.. thats who i've bought all my DOM from.... I was just trying to avoid the nuisance of having them deliver 1 stick to me... not a huge deal, they deliver all over this area, but it is reflected in the price a bit.. probably cost me an extra $1 a foot or so, again no big....

I probably wont even get to it for a month or so now, gonna take me that long to finish the damn x-member anyway! :doah: :haha:

no love for the rig tonight.... retarded hot today, I'm super swamped at work, think I lost 10 lbs in sweat today.... went thru 3 shirts.... it wasn't beer-thirty today, it was death-thirty! :doah::crazy:

That sound like a normal summer day here in Texas.:haha:

I can attest to that! Been randomly going outside all evening sanding, painting and doing minor clean up on my axles, and damn it if I don't start dripping with sweat within a few minutes.

i think i look at this thread first thing every day to see what crazy awesomely detailed things you have made again. Thanks for the inspiration over the build!
