87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

Ryoken,
I have one of these video cards, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127427 just sitting here in the box. I payed $199 at newegg. Its not getting any use. I would let go of it for $50. If you are interested let me know.

I wonder if you could fit the grille without the frame?

not sure why you'd want to, the round rod makes it.. the only way to do it without a frame would be to have it tucked inside the fenders and rad support lips... you couldn't have it external with all thse jagged edges.. but then it'd be nearly impossible to get in/out with disassembling the front clip...

I'm very pleased with it... I think the center section with the filters is gonna look sick when done.. i like how the "bump up" follows the angle of the stinger...

gotta get the center mount and perimeter mounts worked out this week...

Ah ok, makes sense now. What did you make the "rod" from? Looks like just a solid 3/8" bar that you bent.

Are the lights going to be behind the grill? Can I see a wider shot of the front?

yeah. single rounds in the upper corners, and turn signals.... at this point I'm not concerned about blocking light, but we'll see what happens... gonna run 2 offroad lights just outboard of the stinger, on the angle down bars....

I'll see about getting some pics tonight, it's back off now for final welding....

yeah, it's just solid 3/8" rod... heated with a mapp torch at the corners.. the bends at the corners are tight, did them in the vise.. but the ones at the "bump up" where done using a hunk of DOM tacked to my fab table, as they are more rounded... it's welded together at 2 points, down below where the turn signals would be...

I want to do one similar with aluminum expanded with aluminum diamond plate frame. What made you decide to go with steel? Like the 3/8" "frame". Pretty cool.

it's what my welding bud had kicking around the shop.... :doah: :haha:

bought that stuff like 2 yrs ago..... and i'm not very versed with AL welding..... it's surprisingly light, the whole grill weighs 10 lbs or less... not sure which gauge expanded that is.. forget how they rate that.....

and thanks! :D

here's a few more shots... bare in mind, it's just on with a couple wire ties... the mounting will draw it in tighter at the fenders, etc......

I like it. I've been wanting to do the same since it's similar to the phantom grille but different. Well it used to be :P

Now on how to make a frame without welding buddies.

looks like a lot of work Paul, each individual point welded to the outer frame?

you say blacked out, like Satin, or flat?

Are the headlights behind it or in their own opening?

just caught some of those details...disregard the bonehead questioning.

yup, each welded to the frame... the expanded sits flush to the backside of the round rod... so it'll bolt up flush, and leave a reveal of the round rod out front... and yeah, same satin as the bumper, etc..

one new point about the lights... if by chance, NJ nazi's give me a hard time (doubt it tho) or the light is impinged, i figure i can cut a circle out at the headlight and put a round rod frame around the cutout... tho I'm certainly hoping i don't need to do that..

just priced out my coolers, fittings and lines... ouch ;)

oh, and, of course it's a lot of work Dave... :haha: every damn thing i've built on the rig is a fockton of labor... :screwy: I'm resigned to that fact! :doah::haha:

no matter how simple i "think" i'm gonna build something, I'm always down there for hours on end... :weld::grind::weld::grind::haha:

i'm gonna be running 3 of the Earl's coolers. similar to this one...
