87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

a quick cardboard mockup stuffed in there to double check some things before I finish the screen fab in the morn... should work well with the angle rings.. keep in mind it's cardboard and a bit floppy... :haha:

obviously those aren't the right gauges... tomorrow I'll add a small vertical round rod at the edge of the screen.. than I'll 1/8 plate the area of the gauges, than cut out the holes..

should be pretty cool..... especially at night with the gauges lit up.... :pimp:

That will look cool. Did you think about centering the gauges or would that be to far over for viewing and or change airflow?

nah, I've always planned on the left side.... I actually think it'd look kinda goofy in the middle.. and thats unusual for me to say, as I tend to be someone who likes things equilateral... :haha:

it just seems like the kind of mod, that's needs to be all business and function.. get the gauge in the best possible view spot.. period... the function supersedes the form.. especially since the only people seeing/noticing it 98% of the time will be in the cockpit... just like a factory GTO tach is on the left side of the hood...

and I have absolutely no concern about air flow.. even if they where centered.. it's definitely plenty of open screen area to feed the filter... it'll be a 400 hp 383 at some point, not an 8000 hp mountain motor...

so... I'm wandering around Ryoken's Lab™ ;) this morn drinking unleaded, and I figured out how to keep certain areas of the shop clean... I'm going to turn 2/3's of the bay the rig is not in, into it's own room...

I'm gonna partition it off here,

the blue are where I'll bring home a couple long shrinkwrap doors, like this one, but turned the other way, so it hangs over the opening when unzipped..

one from each side... than I'll turn the lathe 90 degrees to the way it is now... between the back wall and the new file cabs... that way, the bench, washer/dryer (when i get em), my box, lathe, compressor, K5, etc won't be getting hammered with dust all the time.. it always seems that the majority of my sh*t comes from projects/fab/grinding/etc on indiviual items... that a room, would take care of 90% of what I do...

obviously there will be some stuff done on the rig, in the "clean" bay, but it'll generally be pretty minimal.. and if I need to do some spraying/painting in place, i can put up a temp short one around the front of the rig for the day.. effectively 3 rooms...

now.. the room itself will be built the way I've done em in the past, thick mil sheet plastic, or white shrinkwrap, with the ceiling and floor ends wrapped around long firring strips.. screwed into the ceiling, than a few weights or cement block sitting on the grd firring strips.....

so for $15 in lumber it should be resolved... I'll probably just go white shrinkwrap with the white doors since both those are free... ;) light should still be outstanding.. 1 8' fixture in that room, 1 over the lathe/workbench, 1 over the toolbox and 1 over the K5 in the other room...

At thoughts on whether there will be any reflection in the windshield?:dunno:

Never had outside gauges. My current tach location inside gives off a bit of reflection which drives me bat sh*t crazy. Will be moving soon.

I ran it for yrs on the K5, and I run the one on Mutt now without any issue, that I've noticed... tho this will be a bit different being "caved/sheltered like that... hopefully it wont be an issue...

the narrow part of the angle rings is actually at about a 45 degree angle, just as much up, as it is to the left...

and keep in mind guys that everything in there will be black, so it should all just kinda blend as a dark area, other than the gauges, and the red of the filter down in there..

actually this brings up a question for myself that I hadn't really thought about/decided on.... some of you may remember I had these led lights that I decided to do indirect lighting with on the ceiling and floor under the seats...

an orange/amber theme..

and a green theme...

I'm thinking with the Pro Comps and copper colored rings on em, the exterior color, dash sheetmetal color that an amber/orange gauge light would look good...

I've never run colored gauge lights, always white... but I figure if I was ever gonna do it, this is the rig... :haha:

it really looks bada$$ in person... :pimp:

I'll have to try that again with the new camera I have now someday...

just get a tripod...solves everything

while we are on photography...the glare you speak of...I have no idea but it crossed my mind that there should be polarized glass or sheets that could be "customized" to fit certain areas if glare is a problem

you could be the first to have a Carl Zeiss gauge lens :haha:

I'd like to see how those autometer LED replacement bulbs light up the gauges.

considering I'm gonna have 13, that could get pricey! :haha:

I'll go for it, see how the ambers look.. can always go back to clear if I don't like it.....

I'm sure that was a major part of the issue.. but even beyond the blurryness, it still doesn't show the light the way it really looks.. it makes the outer roof bars really light up.. and the pic is too "drastic" in the middle, it's much more subtle...

that camera was like a 1/2 mp one, i have a 2 mp one these days.. realistically the earliest I'd actually be back in there building the wiring harness up in there will be next winter...

and don't forget, I was talking Vette HUD display there for a bit!! ;)
