I need some schooling on my 87. What it the sensor and box for on my speedometer. It's not accurate at all just trying to trouble shoot some stuff.
Thanks

Mechanical, is it off consistently or does it wildly move around?

Yeah I know its mechanical but there is a sensor attached to the back of the speedo that has two or three wire going to a box. Just wondering what it was. It does move back and forth, and is off by a varying amount, not just 10 m/hr or anything like that.

Is it off by a consistent percentage? If yes, then you are good to go, easy fix. If not first try lubing the speedo cable drives. After that plan on replacement.

I have no idea what the box you are talking about is.

Did some searching, is it the VSS, vehicle speed sensor. Seems like its tied to the cruise control, torque converter lock up, and the ecm. May be on to something cause my cruise dont work and lock up comes in and out at weird times.

Yup, that is the VSS on the back of speedometer. Those wires run to a DRAC Digatal Ratio Adapter and sends signal to ECM for TCC control, Cruise control and ABS if you have it.

If the speedo is jumping around then so is the signal to DRAC and it will effect the cruise control.

The box behind the speedo is called an optic eye and it converts info to send to the ECM, and cruise control. The VSS and DRAC started in 1990 with the inclusion of the electric speedo.
