I posted awhile back on purchasing a '87 Silverado which has been sitting for about 3 yrs., and I stuck my rides battery in it and put some gas line cleaner in the tank and proceeded to start it up. It did kick over and idle but as soon as I shut it off, it smoked. I was told the tranny was shot, but I didnt attempt to put it in gear or rev it up hard or anything, but I just wanted to see how it sounded and it sounds good without any knocking,...but the smoke has me concerned at this point,(I did talk the lady down a couple hundred off her asking amount). A couple of guys were telling me it sounds like the pistons & rings. Holy crap!!! It's a automatic with a 5.7 Anyone with a few thoughts?:dunno:

It looked like it was coming from behind the carb., air filter area,.. it was white'ish smoke,....not really thick smoke tho. but enough to b noticeable.

If it has been sitting for 3 years I wouldn't get to worried about it smoking after shut off. It could have oil all over the manifolds and exhaust. Run it a bit more.

Ok,..I will keep messin' with it and I just have few more hundred bucks to pay up before I haul it off to my place,...which is about 7 miles away. The lady was only owner too,but she allowed it to be used by several of her kids. But I'm hoping the engine will still have some life left in it to eventually swap it out into my other '87.

Those engines will run for along time. Marty keeps buying used ones for scrap of less out of trucks with bad transmissions rather than rebuild one.

I feel sorta excited that I'll have an extra K5 to mess with, especially that its a 350. The running gear is all intact and I'll eventually have the chance to check it all out once the bugs are sorted out. Again, I forgot to take down the VIN #,... and there again I'll have all the time in the world once I have the ride at my place.

I'd look closely under the hood where the smoke originated--could be a mouse nest or something else in there that might set it ablaze,if its stored a long time, critters like to make nests on the intake or on top of the tranny !...........................................one truck I bought that sat a few years ran OK when I got it to fire up,but after several minutes,a horrible stench began coming out of the engine compartment...turned out there was a few tree frogs living on the intake, that were probably boiled alive, and I found a dead mouse on the back side of the motor near the distributor still smoking!...it could just be the valve covers leaked a bit onto the exhaust manifolds too,or perhaps the oil pressure sending unit or line to the gauge is leaking.........

Yo Diesel4me,..Yea there is a mouse nest underneath the hood in the insulation which I will have to clean out. I've been told that the oil could be on the exhaust manifold and its just burning off. But yea thanks.

Another question I do have is since it's an automatic and I'm going to have to tow back to my place,...do I need to disconnect the driveline? I do have a tow hitch and I can hook up the bumper.

The safest way is to remove the rear driveshaft and put the t-case in neutral, unlock the front hubs if it has manual ones, and then you can tow it at highway speeds safely on all fours or with the front raised up....supposedly you can flat tow a GM 4x4 up to 50 miles under 35 mph by just putting the t-case in neutral, but there is a risk the rear output bearing in the t-case or the slip yoke bushing might overheat from lack of lube if you go any further or faster than that,so its best to just remove the rear shaft ,it dont take that long....

Hey Thanks Again Diesel4me,.. once I finish my downpayments, I'll be able to run up the road with one of buddy's and we'll haul it out. One guy was telling me I could just hook it up,put it into nuetral and be on my merry way,but I think I know alittle better then to do that. Meanwhile,..I'm startin' to stash $$$ for these K5 projects!!!

Only 7 ish miles, nohighway, you'll be fine in neutral.. I've towed longer than that before and all was fine.

Probably keep it no faster then 40. Keep in mind you will have no power steering or brakes while the motors not running.
