FAB454 submitted a new Build:

'87 Suburban "down the rabbit hole"

This build is mild(for now). Mostly going to be cleaning up the PO bodywork with a few custom touches/ideas added in that I've been thinking about.
The truck was a CL find. We needed a bigger family vehicle for offroading than the Jimmy. Eventually it'll be the wife's DD.
Specs:
87 Suburban
91 front clip and badging
5.7 tbi, 700r4, np208

Minor repairs:
vacuum leak(can now switch off of defrost)

Passenger rear window(non function, broken wire in driver master switch)

Diag power rear window (no power to key) in the process the tailgate latches started hanging up, after hitting them with a generous amount of lube the window would no longer go up:need better smileys:

Removed safty switch on passenger side tailgate latch.

Rewired tailgate electrical plugs under the back of the truck(I'm surprised the gate worked at all)

Tuesday I brought the truck in to the shop, end of day, just to cover the godawful tramp stamp on the tailgate(black paint marker and done).

While the tailgate was drying, my coworkers and I are standing on the drivers side of the truck, discussing the "interesting" bondo job. We start tapping, picking, poking......aaaand 2 hrs. later.....

It looks like it was patched for rust near the bumper and had a wheel well put on because of an accident. The arch sheet metal looks like someone took a hammer to it, dinged the sot out of it.
No attempt to pull the side flush at all. just a sh!t tone of plastic filler.NCM_0745.JPG

Anybody have a good source for 2 part waterproof plugs? replacements for under vehicle also threw firewall type

looks like the 3 pin version would work for the tailgate plug:zombie5:sry no normal thumbs up smiley yet

Turned the truck into a porcupine today. More work to get it strait, but I'm happy with the progress.
The rusty pic is a lite coat of "rust to primer" and then sitting out for 48 hrs. I didn't have time to mess with it over the weekend.
Last pic is looking strait down the c piller, where I was trying to do most of the pulling/heavyist plastic filler was.

After all the body work, the flames are going. I'm not really a fan of these in particular. If they were more the long thiner design then maybe.

Little more deconstruct today.
Bumper,trim,left tail light.

After I got the bumper off I found this crusty piece wired to the bumper support.

This piece should take care of all of the lower rot and most of the rear.... divet ?

Yep! Same cut and all. Didn't actually clean it up and try, I just matched it to my other sets. It was held on with some pretty rotted mechanics wire.
Original owner was a farmer. could have been from that far back.

Minimal progress today. Cleaned up the left corner. Took some time figuring the best plan of attack on the rust. I found that using an electric angle grinder with a wire wheel was the best for digging out the rust (along with the plastic filler filed rust craters).
Tried to push some of the weld crease out by going through the tail light hole. With the brace (there is a vertical brace about half way between the wheel well and the tail light) in the way I just couldn't get any good leverage.
Thinking of doing a "blackout " theme. No chrome all black. Door handles are my only hangup. If I get time I'm going to call a local shop that does anodizing, see what it will cost to do the handles (maybe rims?). Not cheep, I'm sure, gotta ask or I'll never know how out of budget it would be.
