I have a question about changing the air cleaner on my truck...actually, I already half-assed it but I want to do it the right way. Where do I get just an open, paper or fiber filter air cleaner that will fit? I've gone through two from LMC that they say will fit but don't. The problem is the center post that screws into the F/I unit itself is not in the center, it's offset to the front so the straight post doesn't line up with the hole in the lid. The post that is in the truck now has a bend to it so it lines up...but I think it's stripped so I can't get a tight fit. Does anyone know what I'm talking about or is this making no sense at all? As far as I know it's a stock TBI unit on there.

Are you talking about that threaded post the goes through the top filter lid and gets a wing nut on top? I'm not to sure what you are asking here.

Paper filters are kind of a pain, I've gone through a good number before I moved to a K&N. If you have $60 to spend, I suggest the K&N.

Do what I did, go to the boneyard and get another air cleaner assy. if you don't want to cut yours up. I cut the edges off of mine and used a piece of 1/4-20 bolt and a coupling nut to make the hold down rod longer. The top part ( thread where the wing nut goes ) is metric I think, so that is why I made the bottom part longer. Does that make sense?

I run a K&N open element on my 87. They make the correct base and lid combo for the diameter of the throttle body. If you check out K&N it will show for 1988 and up year models with Throttle Body Injection. 87 is that tricky year but the 88 and up part number works perfect.

MuddinSuburban, it's not the filter that's the issue it's the position of the hole that the threaded post goes into. It's not in the center of the throttle body housing. Actually CNERGY I know what you're saying too but if you used a piece of 1/4-20 bolt then yours goes straight down through the top too. Mine has a bend to it. I wonder if it's an aftermarket TBI unit? I don't know if I can figure out how to post pictures or not but it sure would make it easier to show you what I'm talking about.

No mine is crooked too, I just made the bottom straight piece longer.

mine is like that as well, the stud is actually bent (factory) to line everything up right. Personally i would highly go against using an open element filter setup on a TBI motor.
i ran one for awhile once, and i personally noticed a serious drop in horsepower, and "get up n go" but then again i live in Phoenix, and underhood temps are probably pretty close to those of the sun in the middle of summer...

The factory stud on a TBI is offset because the stud does not thread into the center of the TBI unit. The offset allows it to be in the center of the air cleaner even though it doesn't screw into the center of the TBI. You just need to move the stud some until the top portion is centered.

Also having an open element air cleaner will draw in hot air and make the truck not run as good as cold air does. Some people are lead to believe that you need more airflow which isn't the case. GM spent lots of R&D figuring out the required airflow for a given engine and then made sure there was moderately enough and then some.
