88-89 Chevy fullsize p/u with 4.3, what manual tranny?

Anyone happen to know what tranny would be behind a 4.3 in an 88-89 fullsize, 2wd p/u??

They still use the 465 then or swap to the nv3500 or 4500?? Not sure if the truck is a 4 or 5 speed.

I am pretty sure that with the 4.3 it had a 3500 5 speed. I could be wrong though I do know in Highschool my friend had one and it had a 5 speed and there was def no granny gear in first.

4 speed was the SM 465 (was an option then)

5 speed is the Getrag. Decent tranny, a little noisy but smooth shifting. A lot like a car 5 speed.

GETRAG!!!!! BARF!!!!!!

My neighbor and I did clutch on one last year...in a 89'.
The clutch fork was worn...and fried the clutch.

We find those rigs around here for $600 for a running rig...
It would have to be a cream puff before I'd buy it.

I have the same thing, but 4x4. My tranny is a Getrag.

It was toast when I bought the truck (still drivable, but 4th is gone, and everything else grinds in coasting). I pulled the drivetrain from a junker last week, and I'll be putting the junkyard tranny in my truck tomorrow if the weather's decent.
It looks like a huge project for me... Probably a lot easier on a 2wd...

Hopefully the junkyard tranny is in decent shape... No way to check it out but install it and drive around on it...

BTW, look for MG5 or MY5 (I forget which one, and I'm not near my list) in your RPO codes, that will tell you if it's a getrag.


Also, in pricing these things out, I've found the cheapest rebuilt to be $1100 without shipping ($1500 from AC Delco), and on average $400-$1000 from a junkyard.
If I could do it again, I wouldn't.
