i remember a thread quite awhile back talked about putting different headlite's in a 88-91 k5 grill. they were 1 piece composite headlight lens from a calvaler, iirc, in place of the side by side headlights in a 88-91 k5 grille. does anyone know if there was ever a write up done on this mod? or know where that original thread is at, so i can see which member had done this mod? i cant find anything w/search.

It's interesting, I was just thinking about something like that yesterday, looking at my 97 van and thinking maybe I can put these instead.
I guess I will wait for the replies here.

I was thinking it was a celebrity?

I have thought about doing it too but now I think I will try to do the bigger duals so I can use better housings.

its a celebrity. Search celebrity light swap. i attempted it, but i ended up buying a 89-91 full set up.

This is all the info that I found when I looked it up:

I know its in Norweigan, but you can see what was done to the rad support and grille:

I hope you find out more than I did. I wouldn't mind attempting this mod as well.

When comparing the two trucks, in my opinion you can see that the bezels look more proportional on the black one. It appears that they used LMC Truck chrome headlight bezels with the billet grille.

It also looks like they used the LMC clear parking lights for the lower part of the bezels. Without the black background (of the stock headlight bezels) the lights appear more proportional to each other. Makes for a much cleaner, (pricey?) install.

I would also venture to guess that those aren't stock celebrity headlights, they must be some sort of aftermarket newer (clear) composite headlight housing catered to the celebrity's of the late 80's. More research is required...

Did the Celeb's use separate bulbs or were they sealed beams?

Anybody know where to get the Celebrity light housings anymore? Looks like NAPA and Rock Auto don't list them. They just use standard 900x bulbs.

Has anyone tried using the composite housings from the gmt 400 trucks? The gmt 400s used 150mm headlights for the first two years (88-89) then switched to the composites, so they should be close the the right size.

My whole thing about lights is the bulbs and the lens. So what if the housing is newer? Does it have a good beam pattern? And what if the bulbs are sucky? I want to be able to use very bright bulbs and have a lens which has a good beam pattern on the road without blinding people. Chances are GM never made anything like that in the 1990's...

Now if you want headlights which look nice when they are turned off, okay then, different deal, but to me headlights MUST be very functional because my safety depends on being able to see down the road at high speeds.

The gmt 400 lights are a big step up from the sealed beams in terms of output and beam pattern, but they still aren't great. There are a lot of aftermarker options for them if they do fit though, including projectors. I currently have the lmc lights in my truck. They are better than stock, but I am still not real impressed with them. The lowbeams seem weak, even with silverstar bulbs, and the highbeams put out lots of light, but have a poor beam pattern. I also don't like the fact that they use the 9005xs, and 9006xs bulbs, which are hard to find and have few aftermarket options. I do a lot of driving on the highway at night, so I wish my k5 had decent lights like my new silverado does.
