hey divorced, could you post up a pic or two of what your talking about. I kind of get it, but i'm a visual type of person, and would like to see some pics, if you can find any. Thanks.
cory

I don't have any pics of it, I just saw them on other boards. I never saved any of them. If I find some I'll post 'em up.

"offset on the hangers from the dually were different than the ones on all the other 1/2 & 3/4 ton trucks we had, by 1 inch. (Side note: this explains why the spring perches are different in 77-87 1 tons, the difference is actually in the hangers, not the frame itself)"

you didnt know that ?

I knew the width of the spring perches was different, i had just never actually thought about where the difference was taken from. Never really needed to care till now, as I was concerned more with the rear axles than the spring hangers. :p:

New pics:

Cut the rear frame off behind the flip brackets. from the nose of the tow hitch to where i cut was exactly 3 feet. :saweet: :woot: :saweet: :woot:

I put this rear tow plate/ ball mount between the frame as the new rear crossmamber. This thing is 3/8" thick and HEAVY. it will eventually get a 2" reciever mounted to the top of it, for a rear attachment point.

This is an attempt to give a fuller view to show how much shorter overall it is, but due to a garage full of stuff I couldnt quite back out far enough. (never thought I'd say that about a 40'x30' garage)

Front hanger pic. This is off of an 85-ish blazer front-front hanger. it needs spacers around the spring eyes, and a few more bolts, but you get the Idea. Also note the 52" spring hanging. :D
gmcbuild15.jpg

Alternate view of the front hanger. Im going to put a piece of angle iron from the bracket up to the inside of the frame here, for a little reinforcement.
gmcbuild16.jpg

side view into the wheelwell of the spring hanging. By dumb luck the axle centerline ends up almost exactly where the stock wheel center was. (nice for lack of rubbing)
gmcbuild17.jpg

rear of spring. Shows that with no wight on spring (full droop, or close to it)
the shackle is vertical.

I also replaced the entire rear hard brakeline today, from the MC back, as it had decided to spring a few leaks. I have to get the rest of the front suspension buttoned up and then I can start the tranny swap. More to pics coming as more work gets done over the coming days!

Thanks. I really only had a general idea of what was involved when I started, and things are just seeming to fall into place really easily so far. (knock on wood) I'm kind of amazed myself over the amount of progress I've made in so little time. I really only get to work on it thursday's and weekends. I keep putting up pics as I go.

PICS!

yeah thats a front axle, bitches!

Front shot of the 8lug 10Bolt.

to all the doubters:

I'll get the t400 out this weekend and replace it with this 700/208.
gmcbuild24.jpg

If ToyotaNick accepts my offer i hope to be running on these 38/12.5 swampers. i figure that they are small enough and light enough to keep a little stress off the 10B and make it survive for a while.
gmcbuild25.jpg

yeah me neither. It may end up a little taller than I was hoping, But for now ill run it and see how i like it.

Side note, : Are my pics ending up really darkto anyone else or is it just my moniter adjustments?

They're clear, but they all look like it was real overcast.

They're clear, but they all look like it was real overcast.

if By over cast you mean inside the garage, then yes. :D

Just kidding. The first series at the top was taken on sunny days with the big door open, the rest of the pics were taken with the doors closed and the only light coming from a few skylights and flourescent lights, som maybe that is where the "overcast-iness" comes from. I dunno for sure.

pulled the tranny out today (sat) and got a few odds and ends done, ill be putting the 700/208 in tomorrow. It rained alot today which sucked a bit of my motivation away. I have the suff for the makkings of a new rear shaft (ill be doing it myself) so we'll see how that goes. More pics as i get them.

popped in the tranny/t-case today, went in pretty easy. Need to mod the crossmember for front shaft clearance. got a few nore odds and ends to pin together, but the MAJOR parts of this project are done. :woot: :woot: :woot:    Ill get some pics tomorrow night.

you leave my garage at 11.30 at night again and you're gonna get shot.

you get dumped?

Not my fault you dont check the compound at night for unwanted visitors...

Anyway, I modded the stock C30 2wd crossmember tonight for clearance over the front shaft. came out pretty sweet, not quite as stiff as i'd hoped (just a little saggy where the cut out is..) But all in all not bad.

Odds and ends from here...

I forgot the coolest thing of all! I got a pair of leather buckets from a late model mustang GT (driverside power!) for a grand total of ZERO dollars! they have a small bit of fire damage to the rear sides (takeouts from a wrecked burned car) but who cares! they were free! Im so excited. i sat in them on the garage floor for close to 30 minutes today.
