In my shop. Doing stuff.
Caught the bug on Power Tour. He grew up with this generation of car.
1988, the year he was born.
35th anniversary edition.
L98 with tuned port injection.
Has the stock wheels also.
41,700 miles on it.
7 speed manual. That's right. That is what I typed. 4 speed with OD in 2, 3 and 4. Button on the shifter shifts up or down with a light lift of the throttle. Never seen one before.

Runs like a raped ape.PXL_20230617_170557571.jpgPXL_20230617_171415716.jpgPXL_20230617_191458488.jpg

He washed it. Good 5 foot car now. Had black spotting and bird poop on it. All washed off with no residue left over. A good clay bar and wax will make it amazing.

It has an oil change tag from 02/05 that the next oil change is due at 43k miles. Has 41,700 on it.

Tires are going to be swapped out on Thursday. The dates on these are 2003 and 2004. I thought the ones on Fugly were old.

He said it had a rattle under normal load and on deceleration. Put it on the lift to check things out. Found a nut on the passenger exhaust flang was backed off. Had been that way long enough that it would not thread on. Pulled the other 2 off and ran a die on. All good now and the rattle is gone.
Now for the annoying squeak that runs with rpm. Is there while driving or sitting. At the back of the engine. Checked for vacuum leak with brake cleaner. No help. Wade got in to move it into the shop. Pushed the clutch 1 inch and it went away. Crap. Looks like I will get to pull the transmission later.

Powers Stop rotors and pads kit has been ordered through Summit.

Has a small power steering leak. Nothing to worry about yet.

AC will get the charge checked tomorrow as it is not working.

Everything electrical works. Right down to the radio antenna retracting.

2 remotes and key sets.

They started at $9500 2 months ago. Dropped to $8500 2 weeks ago. Asked what the bottom dollar was. "$6000". He said "done deal". And he drove it home on 20 year old tires.

He made sure to tell me it still had the original gauges

That’s a great deal!

He loves to watch them. The 85mph max on the sweeping gauge is funny.
Seriously though, tell him congratulations. Those cars are super fun to drive. I tried to buy a white ‘96 twenty some years ago when my credit wasn’t the best and got turned down. I was bummed.

Congrats to Jr, wonder which Vette he'll want to run next years Power Tour ?

Those are the vettes the purists don't get into. Great buy at 6k for sure! The Doug Nash 4+3 is pretty solid, but be careful not to try bang shifting the OD unit between gears. It's kind of similar to using a gear vendors OD as you can split gears from 2nd through 4th.

I always liked that generation of Corvettes. The suspension is really good and is only a set of coil-overs away from being even better when you dump the transverse springs on both ends. The L98 has gobs of low end torque and is geared well with the manual trans. That's a really good combo there. Only one better would be a LT1/6-speed in the later C4's.

Being a kid in the 80's I lusted for that generation of Corvette. I had posters, built multiple models, and even have a handful of GM promo-models from the dealer. The instrument cluster is wacky but for the time was incredibly high tech. If it all works he got a gem. I had a computer game on my PC when I was in middle school that was all Corvette, specifically the C4's. They had that dash replicated perfectly in 16bit greatness.

The name of the game was Vette!, you could even drive Calloway's and the Sledgehammer version. I wasted many hours lighting up the streets of San Fransisco on that game.

Congrats to the new Vette owner!

I've been thinking a vette of that vintage would be fun.

Reminds me of a game I played on the Apple IIgs called Test Drive.
