Only could hear it while priming, too loud to hear anything while its cranking over but fuel should be pumping through while the line was disconnected at the filter and cranking over correct?

Yes, it should be pumping while cranking. But to double check... look at fuel pump relay on firewall. There will be a red wire hanging there, it's a prime wire. Hook 12 volts to it and fuel pump will run.

Ran the pump via the red test wire at the relay for about 4-5 seconds then the pump started to sound like it was bogging down as if was unable to pump more fuel into the line or it was getting starved at the pick up (clogged?). Flipping the air cover back correctly was the very first thing I took care of lol.
If the line pressurized the tone of the pump will change too, which would be normal. Pressure is what determines good or bad in the fuel system.

I have never seen a filter sock clog to the point of not allowing any fuel at all. But I have seen several times the rubber hose connecting the sock to the actual pump split wide open. Leaving very minimal fuel pressure but an audible fuel pump sound.
I would drop the tank just to be sure. Nothing bad ever came about from fully cleaning a fuel tank and replacing the sock. I honestly, since I am lazy, if I drop the tank I replace the fuel pump regardless. Delco's of course. I really really hate dealing with dropping tanks and such, so its laziness insurance for me.

OK. I will crack the fuel line again at the filter and run the pump via red wire just to confirm before committing to the pump replacement. I'm liking the floor access panel idea the more I look into it 
Once the tank is removed, subsequent (if needed) isn't that tough. I have resorted to greasing every fastener that goes back together that I'm not worried about it loosening up.
While I don't like the prospect of having to take things back apart, it is far less time and frustration if you don't need a breaker bar for every 3/8" nut on the truck.
And do you really need another location for rust to start in SC?

haha I've had my share of rusty S-10 Blazers over the years. For some reason salt air and 80's sheet metal dont play nice together. On a side note while I was under the K5 last eve messing witht eh fuel line I took a look a the small leak I have at the T-case and can tell its coming from where the nose cone mates up to the T-case housing. Aside from removing the rear drive shaft anything else I should expect to deal with when attempting to remove/reseal this or will it just simply unbolt and slide off the output shaft?
Not familiar with what you mean "nose cone"? The adapter between the trans and t-case?
You'd have to take off the input and output shaft, unbolt shift linkage, remove whatever wiring is attached to it, the speedometer cable, but that's all I can think of if its the seal between the t-case and adapter.

The "cone" looking piece that the rear drive shaft slips into on the transfer case. That piece look as if bolts up to the main body of the transfer case.
Also I havent done anything with the pump/tank yet but did open the line again and put 12v to the pump. Let it run for 5 secs but no fuel came out.

She LIVES!! Got the pump issues squared away and with some fresh gas and after two primes of the pump i could hear the gas gurgle in the empty lines and she fired right up. Checked the injectors and spray is good to go while at idle. Awesome job everyone for the help, THANKS!
Was it the pump, or that hose?
I'm putting $10.00 on it being the hose I've had two of those burst on me...

I'm curious about what point they started using ethanol resistant hose...there are probably a bunch of "NOS" pumps out there that have the old hose still.
Sorry can't help on the t-case, never had a chain drive one apart. Probably fairly simple though. I believe it's called the extension housing?

I posted this about mine a year or so back about the hose splitting, it was a new pump, meaning less than two years old, Installed it shortly before the new engine and trans went in, drove it from Phoenix to Indiana, a couple of months later it started acting up just out of the blue, coughing, sputtering check engine light came on, got a few codes, but naturally, they were false readings and I ended up replacing a MAP sensor 
finally decided only after that to hook up the fuel pressure gauge and saw low pressure. I didn't even suspect it in the first place because I knew the pump wasn't that old... BUUUUUT...

Pump was bad. The old one started to work (pump some fuel) then bit the dust again. the hose actually didnt look that bad but could see some cracking going on. As far as the T-case leak I think the part that Im referring to is called the "output shaft housing". From the other NPs I've found (231 etc) looks like it shouldnt be hard at all to remove/reseal.
Probably not relevant, but Delco pump?
Wondering if "better safe than sorry" isn't the watchword here, and best to just buy new hose that is ethanol rated for this spot.
Pretty sure mine is pre-ethanol, hasn't gone yet but if I was smart, I'd drop the tank and do it pre-emptively.

WAS a Delco pump, yes, only buy the factory replacement on certain parts, this being one of them. I've had this tank down like 4 times since I've owned it, getting a bit bored of it.
Also, any of you with failed pump issues noticing the Black mesh screen deteriorating? I've seen a few lately that just disintegrate and the pump sucks the fibers in causing death!
Seems all new pumps come with a white cotton cloth like new screen.
