This 2wd box came off off an '89 suburban.

Using it for crossover, I made sure I got a box from the years that used the metric o-ring fittings because I'm doing an LS swap and want all of the hoses to have the same style fittings on both ends.

I looked into the ports and the one to the right seems like it's missing something, the port to the left has a little metal piece that moves if your press down on it with something that's a similar diameter.

I've only messed around with steering boxes that use the inverted flare fittings, never seen one port left open like the right port on this box though.

What kind of fitting do I use in that hole?

You need an o ring style which would have been on the burb it came from. It should bolt in with the hoses on the Ls if I remember correctly.

Got an adapter fitting, 16MM male o-ring to -6AN.

Gonna put an elbow on there with a push lock fitting on the end.

So one thing about this steering box is still bothering me.

The port to the left, has a rubber O-ring in it and it looks like the port is kind of blocked off by another piece of metal. Is this a broken piece of the high pressure line fitting that was left in there? Both ports should look exactly the same correct?

I looked up the replacement high pressure line and its male o-ring fitting on both ends, male o-ring fitting isn't gonna fit in the port to the left with that stuff down in there.

Does anyone have a picture (or can take one) of an metric o-ring style box 2WD or 4WD, should both look the same.

When I get home I'm gonna stick a pick in there and see if that little piece pops out.

Is that thing in the left port supposed to be there though, I don't want to put the new hose and the end of the fitting that is supposed to go down in there pushes whatever that is down into the gears inside of the box.

You're worrying about nothing. I have two boxes sitting here that look the same.

And the male fitting on the high pressure line goes in there withoug any issues?

Does yours have that o-ring sitting in there or could the o-ring that's sitting in my port be one that fell off of the fitting?

Ok, I've got 3 of the older style inverted flare steering boxes and I'll give them a look.

I think the o-ring from the high pressure line fell off and stayed in my port... I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

Should be able to pull it out with a pick and leave that little flapper door check valve alone.

Does that check valve just keep power steering fluid from reversing and going back into the line?

I thought the power steering pump had a check valve too located in the fitting where the high pressure line hooks up?

The one on the pump is a pressure relief, the box is a check valve.

Someday when you have a roached out box, take it apart.

Today is not that day....

I have a few old 4x4 boxes that leaked a little bit. I was gonna rebuild them and maybe hold onto them or sell em.
