Thankfully I was close enough to home to basically use the brakes to hold the vehicle in check. A little bit scary and definitely not safe. Brakes were very hot when I got home.

So It seems extremely likely to be the throttle return spring. I went out there and looked at it now, and FYI I'm a bit of an idiot mechanically, but everything is hot and I couldn't really get too good of a look..

Is anyone aware of a write up or diagrams or photos showing where the throttle return spring is located? I did replace the high idle solenoid quite a while back, is it in the same general location?

Any help is appreciated. I found several threads saying to "take a look at the throttle return spring,." Agree I need to do that, but I don't know where it's located. Thank you..

If you changed the fast idle solenoid. Then you can find the throttle lever. The fast idle solenoid pushes against it and the throttle should be sitting next to the plunger at idle.

If your spring is ok. Look at the square end of the throttle cable that is supposed to fit fully into the cable bracket. Sometimes it will get knocked out of its socket and leave you with a lot of throttle applied.

If it is not the return spring, my guess is the throttle cable is pinched and worn out. This issue has happened to me twice. If the throttle cable is not connected to the secure mount tab on the 6.2 air filter housing, the cable will bend and cause this heartache.

Please keep us posted on what you find!

When I first read this I thought it was a joke. I guess it was just the terminology.

I hope you get it fixed easy.

2INSANE FOR THE WIN. Throttle Cable is worn out. Where it attaches to the throttle bracket at the front of the injection pump, it is visibly cracked and worn. It also sits a little bit crooked in the bracket and just looks a bit tweaked and worn. See photos

I moved it back and forth with my hand. The spring was partially stretched out, would not return to compressed position. I manually got it to return, then cranked the engine and worked the pedal. The throttle would stick partially open. Recreated the problem.

So I ordered a new throttle cable kit from O'Reilly's. They said they do not think it includes the throttle return spring. The spring appears to be functioning properly, but I probably should replace it. It appears to be easy to replace.

Are there any special tricks to installing throttle cable? Do I need to start at one end or the other, are there any tricky parts, etc? The pedal mechanism in the footwell seems fairly straightforward.

Thank you all for providing helpful advice to idiot level people like me!

It should be a really easy swap. 30mins-1hr tops. Use a long needle nose pliers to get the clip out. If you drop it in the valley, use magnet probe to get it out.

Compare the old one to the new one. Some styles need to be modified to work well. Good luck!

Fixed!

What I learned:

1. O'Reilly's gave me the correct part. Many threads on the interwebs suggested that no parts house would give me the correct part. The fitting on the throttle end of the cable was very slightly different (smaller hole in the ring), but it did slide over the notched rod thing (on the throttle lever) and stay there fine. The factory setup had a weird metal clip thing crimped over the end of it. I couldn't get that thing to go back on. I suppose, worst case scenario, the throttle cable end could theoretically get knocked off of the notch in the little rod thing. In that event, the throttle return spring will snap the throttle closed, and the engine would either shut off or maybe idle, and the gas pedal would have no effect. Seems to me pretty unlikely that the throttle cable would come loose, because the throttle return spring tension holds it in the notch on the rod.

2. By far the most difficult part of this project was getting the pedal end of the throttle cable out of the firewall. I should have removed the front seat, but of course was too lazy. So lots of contortioning, sweating, and cursing up under the dash, levering and shoving with a screwdriver to get that goddamn thing to let go and push through the firewall. That was easily 85% of the job.

Comments? Thanks!

If you carefully remove the metal washer on the end of the IP throttle cable and lightly sand it so there is room to install that metal retainer clip, it should fit.
