89 Chrysler 5th Ave with 318 question

I just bought a 89 5th Ave that has a 318 in it and 24,000 original miles on it. The ammeter is pegging out on it after it starts up. It sometimes stays pegged and other times comes out of it and runs in the normal voltage range. It seams like when the rpms are low the voltage comes down and then up when you give it gas. I know nothing about Chrysler stuff so what do you think it is? Is there a voltage regulator? Is the Alternator shooting out too much juice.

Is it am amp guage or a volt guage that you are talking about? What year is the vehicle?

Voltage regulator. Have it checked out and replaced if needed.

The car is a 1989 and the gauge reads D or C as in discharge and charge. It runs pegged to the charge side and comes down a little when I lower the rpm's by stoppping or slowing down.
