ok guys.....
dropped my tank and found that somebody has cut the connector(truck side) and had straight wired the the sending unit. i need to know how many wires im looking for running to the tank and where i can find the correct connector. i dont even know what one looks like.

two wires were ran to the tank, but cant remember the colors...

Think i bought the pig tail you wanted off rock auto

Two wires (12V for pump, fuel gauge wire) and they are weatherpack connectors.

Pretty cheap off Mouser, but a pigtail is going to be easier and cheaper for a single install.

If you are cheap and like wrecking yards, should be pretty easy to find on mid-late 80's to mid 90's GM cars and trucks. No reason you couldn't use a 3 or 4 prong Weatherpack either, just wouldn't be as clean. I'm guessing all cars and trucks with EFI during that period used the same connector.

Totally understand! I used to love going to the wrecking yards, anymore I just don't have the time, and it's not like the "good old days" when they were chock full of square bodies and RWD GM cars. :(

One wife and four kids....

Dang sounds like my conundrum

OK guys, got off in time to hit the junkyard , got a plug that matches my sending unit(black/white,purple , gray )

My truck has only two= purple and what could be black/white but when I wipe it with wd-40 and a rag to get a good look it's white. That's not too much of the issue.... I know one is 12v and the other is for the Guage from earlier help.

My main question is what do I do with the other wire from the plug? The new sending unit has a ground for the frame...... could the other wire off the plug also be a ground?

If the plug you got has three terminals/wires, ignore one of them.

Assuming the fuel pump ran fine, and the gauge worked before you disassembled, assume the wires were spliced together properly. Solder the existing wires to the pigtails on your connector, and connect it.

Sending unit ground on our vintage goes directly to the frame, no connector. It's entirely possible that later on GM combined all three, and ran the ground somewhere else on the truck, since the tank grounds at the frame seem to be failure prone on the R/V trucks ('87-91 square bodies). Not to mention, one less thing to bolt up/disconnect for assembly and service.

I always like to twist the wires together (making sure they can't short) and make sure whatever I'm getting ready to "fix" works right, before I break out the soldering iron. :)

Don't forget the shrink tube for the soldered sections.
