Curious if a diesel swap is doable and what it would take? I have an 89 K5 Scottsdale 4x4 and the current motor pushed a rod through the oil pan. I wanna get it back on the road desperately and am looking for options. The 12 valve has my attention but what’re the experts thoughts?

Would a diesel fit into the current transmission with a conversion kit? I believe it’s a 700r4 and I had it rebuilt shortly before the motor problems.

Looking for options, if the diesel would work what would it take? Is the old motor able to be rebuilt? And what’s your thoughts on what’s a better option to look at?

6.2L Gm diesel bolts in. Not that I would ever recommend it. Sorry oil burner guys.

12 valves are a more common swap but it’s not a bolt in. The engine crossmember is in the way of the oil pan if I remember right. It’s a heavy option that you’ll have to ditch the 700r4 to make work though there are rare 12v to Chevy trans bolt pattern adapters that were used in p30 Chevy step can chassis.

Personally I’d get a small block crate engine and stuff it in. If you don’t have much for fab skills making a Cummins work is going to be beyond what you can accomplish.

Better yet if you want more power and torque in a bolt in package get a big block Chevy. That all depends on where you are and if you are dealing with emissions laws/testing.

I agree with Zoomad75. Since you need this rig on the road, go with the small block crate motor. Cummins would be cool, but is going to take a bit of time, money and planning.

Will the local communists let you register a vehicle with a different engine?

You physically can put a 6.2 diesel in it but I don't think you can make that swap anymore in CA.
You might want to check with the referees in Fresno.
Up here in Sacramento they are not allowing it anymore.
I have some options for you on engines gas or diesel.
Try and find out about the referees in Fresno and then reach out to me here
