How bad are your floors?

I had to replace the whole rear and have a number of patches that I'm putting in today on the driver's side. Check my build thread later today when I get the pics up.

But, if you've got swiss cheese, you have some serious decisions to make.

You can get patch panels at LMC, classic trucks etc no problem. That said, if it is rusty on the outside, the inside will be 10x as bad. Completing rust repair on these trucks requires hundreds if not thousands of hours of work to do it properly.

If you don't already have all the tools and the know how, you may very quickly finding yourself scrapping the whole truck once you open that can of worms and realize how bad it really is.

In my opinion, you really can't beat going for a drive to the desert on the opposite coast and picking up a rust free body to swap onto your existing chassis. Or just swap the few things you like from your current truck over to the new truck (like the fuel injected engine, manual transmission, plow, etc)

I personally had to give up on the square body trucks period -- They simply don't exist up here without a pile of rust anymore. We are pretty much forced to run the newer body style trucks with IFS and convert them over to solid axles etc.

ok in the rear the floor under the rear seat is pretty solid once you get to the wheel wells on the inside of the truck is where the rot for the rear starts all im looking for is like some sort of custom support that can be bolted or welded to the fram under the floor pans like where you sit and they hold/ support the floor up just so i can at least drive around yard without worring about falling thru to the ground when i hit a bump. any ideas?

ok what i have in mind is mounting a few pieces of exhaust pipe to the fram that sit right under the driver side floor pan holding the floor up

Yah i dont think hes talking patch and fix all tge rust and holes, just keep the body on the "top" of the frame lol. I would try to put in some long supports, maybe angle iron, across the frame on top, maybe with some rubber on the top side, then maybe weld some some pieces from the frame to the supports and call it a day. As long as the cab stays on, the rust isnt gonna affect how it performs :thumb:

A lot of guys here with a rotted out K5 that still has a decent frame will just buy a cab from a pickup at a salvage yard and put that on the frame, its not too hard to do,you'll need the rear cab mounts off the pickup frame or make your own though...then they make a short flatbed for it,or chop a shortbed down to fit and make a super-shortie pickup out of it........................................................................................................if your just looking to do it the cheapest way possible, the angle iron or tubing idea is OK,some guys have used Uni-Strut channel or square tubing from street signs that is galvanzed ,to re-bolt the floor to the frame...I've seen many K5's used for yard plows here, that were scrapped at the junkyard that had pressure treated 4x4 posts laid across the frame rails and jammed under the remains of the floors ,with lag bolts holding them together too...not pretty, but hey,it works, and its cheap!.....

a cab swap is in my dreams lol it seems like a lot of work like how the heck am i going to take the old body off? with a freakin crane?

You "tub" would likely come off in peices if its badly rotted anyway, even if you had a crane to lift it off with, chances are good it would fall apart once its off the frame................................................................................................................................................................................................................you can take all the body mount bolts off and the other stuff like steering colum, gas tank filler hose, and brake lines and wires, etc, and jack up one corner at a time and keep blocking it up until you have enough clearance to put a 4x4 post or thicker under the body near the front floor and rear wheelwells ,and support the posts on sawhorses or 55 gallon drums ,so the rolling chassis can be rolled out from under it.....I've used a tree with a 6+" thick branch and a chain falls to lift a tub off the frame before too..or a gantry crane, which I'd trust more than a tree that might have rot!....................................................................................................a friend with a front end loader or bobcat is very handy at times like this.......a friend of mine is doing a cab swap on his truck,he is taking a severely rotted 87 Suburban body off and installing a cab, then he's going to make a custom flat bed for it,which will be 10' long,to use as a yard plow/firewood hauler and "fun" truck...

Beer, Torch. Tree branch, pully, rope, bunch of people. :waytogo:

Then for new tub, go in reverse order (beer last so you dont mess up the nice one) :D

Wait a minute!!
Are we replacing a cab, or lynching him????

Sounds like it could go either way..........

It could go either way honestly. Depends on how you are feeling that day I guess
