figure this is better than the lounge :doah:

Buddys moms car died a while back. First time he fixed it, he just did the fuel filter, and the thing ran for a few days after that. Then it died again. This time I went over his place to look at it. After getting it started with starting fluid, I figured the fuel pump was junk. So he replaced that. Started up and ran for a few weeks, his mom said she hit a big puddle (not sure wether that really happened or not), and it died again.

Haven`t looked at it too much again, but since its raining here and I can`t work on my rig, I figure I`ll go over and give him a hand. One thing I did notice, was when you turn the key to the on position, I don`t hear the fuel pump at all.

Any ideas boys?

check your relay, you should have a constant power to one side of the relay, and when you hook your test light up one of the other terminals on the relay should get a 5 sec power feed for the fuel pump prime, then shut off

if your good there, go on down the connector on the tank and test it there, if no juice then you know you have a wiring problem

if you do have juice, time for a new pump

just did a fuel pump in a yukon and had problems but figured out it was my own doing. but thats how i tested for mine

also check your ground

Yeah, the relay was going to be my next plan of attack. I`ve only ever done a manual fuel pump, so this is all new to me, not that its not something hard to do. I did however talk to my buddys dad, and he said it wasn`t uncommon for someone to just replace the relay when replacing the pump.....

ya when i worked for the chevy dealership, i always checked the relays first, i was never good at checking them, i would listen for the clicking for the relay, and to just satisfy myself i would go get one from parts, and swap it in and see if it fixed it, if it didnt i would just put it back. electric in tank pumps are junk in my opinion, i love the simplicity of a mechanical one, but i guess both have there good and bad areas.

also since you said it wasnt long ago that yall replaced the pump and she supposedly hit a puddle the relay and the fuse box would def be your first place to look.
