I am looking at buying an 89 1/2 ton suburban 4x4. Owner says it isn't shifting into third gear but her mechanic said it didn't need a rebuild. Any idea on what it could be?

Secondly it doesnt have the stuff for the third row which I would need. How hard is it to add everything for the third row seats?

Anyone able to help?

It should have a TH700R4 trans and if it won't shift into 3rd it likely needs a new transmission (which will probably cost as much as the truck is worth).

That is what I was thinking but was wondering if I was missing something. Has 145k and in great shape other than the tranny. I can probably pick it up for about $700 bucks. Thats why I was wondering.

if its in great shape other than the tranny id find one with low miles and swap it in. Just make sure the truck is in really good shape, including the motor.

Thats what I am thinking about. Anyone know how hard it is to add the third row and all associated crap?

I have an 89 Burb 1/2T 4x4. If you have the slots in the floor and the seat belt attachement points in the body all you have to do is drop in the 3rd row seat. When I take mine out to haul stuff all you see is the slots in the floor for the front and rear portions of the seat and the shoulder seat belt parts that are attached to the body. Takes about 30 seconds to remove or install the seat.

If you DON'T have the slots in the floor for the 3rd seat you would have to mark and cut and attach the little "buckets" that the seat attaches to. Might be some light welding I guess.

When I bought my '88, I did not care that it did not have the third seat option because I figured the mounts would be under the carpet... I was wrong. The mounts can just be cut out from a donor burban and then welded/bolted/riveted to the floor. There are blank spots that will need to be cut out to provide room for the mount pockets.

Also, I paid $2500 for my burban 2 years ago and am now spending close to $1800 having the 700r4 rebuilt with stronger parts.

heck, if the rest of the truck is in decent shape, and you CAN get it for about $700 or so, i'd do it, granted the trans is not cheap, but around here, for a decent rebuild, they run around $1000-1500 installed.

I just got one several months back for the 94 and installed it myself, cost me $550 out the door.

I have a blue seat in good condition.

But if it doesn't have the pocket latch things in teh floor, you have to add those.
