Anyone change an automatic rear window actuator to a manual one found on earlier and non-silverado models?

Have a 90Silverado K5. My rear window mechanism is a real POS and doesn't work if conditions aren't 'just right' (which is never)

Someone once suggested changing it to a manual crank. Anyone do this? Anything I need to look out for?
Considering getting the parts from LMC Trucks but want to know if this is a simple switch or something more involved first.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Going from electric to manual is a cinch. Swap the regulator and the outer handle setup for the manual versions and you are done. You may need to create a couple mounts in the tailgate for the manual handle to bolt to, but I can't remember for sure. Other than that it is the easiest swap you can do.

Just remember to remove the fuses to the power wires, you don't want them shorting out.
 
I read my shop manual this weekend and it points out that you have to drill a hole through one of the arms (the long ones with gears on the edge) and put a screw through it and into one of the backing plates. This is because they are loaded with a spring of some sort, and when you try to remove them they can pop apart. Seeing as how they are very scissor like, they could probably cut your finger off if you were unlucky. So ... be sure to do that so they can't move.
 
I have pulled them, and although they do move up towards the top of the tailgate, they don't have any chance of coming to get your fingers. Ideally, remove the regulator bolts with the window still attached. Be sure to support the window while it is up and laying down. This will allow you to disconnect the bolts that hold the window to the regulator while the spring tension is very low, preventing a sudden movement.
