Hello, first post here. Been reading for years though.

My 1990 suburban with a 700R4 needs a new engine and I'd like to put in a 383 for some more torque and hp. This is a daily driver and mountain trail cruiser, hunting, camping, fishing rig.

I found some decent prices through S&J engines in Spokane. My dilemma now that I'm seeking advice for is which direction to go with the fuel delivery system. I don't want a carb, so I'm thinking these are my options in order of expense:

1: use the factory TBI system and get a chip from ???

2: factory TBI and Dynamic EFI ebl-II (I've never done engine tuning, but could probably figure it out, but i really have no desire to burn chips)

3: upgrade to aftermarket oem style TBI like affordable efi, performance fuel injection systems, Howell, etc

4: install holley sniper/FiTech

5: spend $500 more for a vortec 383 and install Edelbrock Pro Flo 4 (most expensive option and my budget is limited)

Any help and expertise here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

While price is a factor, I’ve read enough testimonials in favor of the pro flo that it is high on my list, there’s a whole thread here of folks that have made the switch and I plan to join them very soon.

That's exactly why its on my list!

I may be wrong, but it seems like its the most expensive option while also being the least problematic.

Why do you think you have to have the vortec heads?

My brother has the Holley setup on his 383 wagon, it wasn’t/hasn’t been very problematic but it was annoying. I’m watching to see how his experience plays out but I really like the MPFI that comes with Edelbrock.

Doesn't have to be vortec heads, just can't be TBI heads. So either I go with the vortec 383 or a pre TBI 383. I talked to edelbrock and they don't make a pro flo 4 manifold to fit TBI heads.

The HT383E comes with that crappy flat cap distributor, waste of money.
Get the regular HT 383. Sell the intake, go proflo.

holley sniper problems i had https://ck5.com/forums/threads/my-h...m-the-start-update-the-story-ends-now.335419/

went edelbrock pro flo 4 and never looked back .

just about as close as you can get to a all in 1 system in the 1 part # box .

and look here for discount on there systems . https://ck5.com/forums/threads/ck5-discounts-for-intakes-efi-or-other-performance-parts.338162/

Your experience with the sniper has me leaning toward the Flo Pro, I just have to convince my self its worth the money.

I will probably need to rebuild the 700R4 eventually, and it needs a re-gear/new axles. Both expenses I have to figure into the picture here . . . but the flo pro really is looking nice . . .

Thanks for the discount link, I'll support CK5 members/vendors wherever I can!

I totally get that. Unfortunately buying/building a good engine is never cheap anyway

I will say avoid the TBI heads as mentioned. Vortex heads are ok, if you get some that aren’t cracked. Price head cost and machine work to them, you’ll likely find a good complete head is better

the vortec heads don’t do well on factory rocker studs with much lift above .480”

I'm open to suggestions on the engine or a good builder, especially if someone knows of a good builder in the Billings, MT area.

If you’re on a tight budget consider the L31 long block, slap a pro flo on it and roll on pimp!

I know it doesn’t meet your 383 requirement, but it should make decent power and far and above that of your current TBI motor.

You make a good point . . . And now you've got me thinking.

I could also do a L29 and still probably b be less expensive than a 383 while probably making more torque. Hmmm
