I think I have decided to steer clear of another 700R4. What are my options? I have found a SM465/205 and a SM465/208, which should I look at? The 205 is a better transfercase and can be swapped to a twinstick, but my 241 should directly swap for the 208 so I can keep my speedo and run a SYE later down the road. What are your thoughts??? Should I even look at stick shift transmissions?
Curtis

The 205 low range sucks, the 208 should be fine for you, lots of guys have good luck with them.

Any idea of the year model on the 465/208?

I believe from 85 on GM made the trans/tcase combos all the same overall length (by varying adapter lengths). So if the 465/208 were 85+ you could swap on your 241 and use the same driveshafts.

The same would hold true if the 465/205 is 85+ but I agree that the 208/241 low ranges are better.

I'm not 100% sure on the year of either setup. The 208 setup seems to me that it would be easier to find parts for later down the road. Could I upgrade to a doubler later down the road with either setup?

Why are you opposed to running the 700R4? They can be built tough, have a low first gear and overdrive.

Most of the shops I have talked to wont warranty their work with tires 35" or larger. :dunno: I currently have a set of used 35's and I have plans to be running 37's within 3 months.

hate to burst your bubble. but the 241 from the 700r4 will NOT fit the 465 round 6 style with out a input gear swap from 27 spline ( 700r4 ) to the 32 spline 465/400/4l80-e style. :eek1:

and here is to top place for reman 700r4 we use in our trucks from the guys info i have read over the years. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/index.shtml

700s can be built pretty tough over all.

Have you checked any online places. I have more than one friend who is running a 700 with bigger than 37s and they are mostly fine.

A doubler behind a 465 can be expensive. The 203 that came behind a 465 is a rare bird. Usually fetching 300 bucks or more for adapter and t case.

I have seen the bowtieoverdrives and the monster... all of the people I have read about want 1500-2000 dollars for a transmission that they say will live. If I decide to run a larger tire one day I believe I would always wonder if the transmission would let go. We all know the SM465 is stout, and I can have one for a lot less than the big name 700R4. I am really hoping to have a fairly bullet proof transmission in my truck for 1000 or less. Is it possible??? Am I looking in the right direction? After getting all my 1 ton swap and lift parts I'm starting to get kinda light in the wallet!

Ok I have found a SM465 and a 208 that I am going to look at this weekend. The guy has everything in the truck still! What all do I really need? I know I need the trans, transfer case, cross member, bell housing, master & slave, pedals, and shifters for both the 465 and 208. Will this swap mess with the EFI computer in my truck? Do I just need an older cluster and a speedo cable to keep a functional speedometer?
Curtis

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but, I think it may be as simple as swapping out the VSS from your 241 and put it in place of the speedo cable output on the 208. If not maybe need to swap over the whole tailhousing...

I was thinking that I had to swap to the mechanical speedo. I hope it is as simple as you say. Seems as if nothing I do is ever that simple!:thumb:

The VSS and cable assemblies don't just bolt in swap.

I'd try to find a way to use your 241 with the SM465. Either that or swap in the mechanical speedo and the cable.

Good buddy of mine just had a 700r4 grenade built with all the goodies. Shifted real nice, he was stoked about being all built.

2nd time out after the build, got a lil flexed up, and snapped the case.

He should've left it all soft and wimpy inside, I'm sure it would have held together.

Good choice on the 465 swap, lol

I would recommend going with the SM465/NP208. It will be a direct bolt in. The driveshafts are the same. As for the NP241, if you can find a 32 spline input shaft, you can use that and make the NP241 work behind the SM465 in place of the NP208.

The ECM programming is different between a manual and an automatic. That being said, mine ran just fine after the swap. Is the donor truck TBI? If so, maybe you could get the PROM as well.

How can I swap the 241 to a 32 spline input? Does somebody offer a replacement input shaft? Can I rob one from another 241? I am really really hoping the engine runs without a VSS signal! The donor truck is a 6.2 so the ECM wont work.
Thanks
Curtis
P.S. I'm starting to have K5 withdrawls! I may have to swap the trans and drive it for a week or so before I tear it down for the lift and axle swap.
