'90 Sub Dsl Elec Issue- Help Appreciated

I am talking long distance with the seller of a Suburban that has what I'm looking for, except for the tailgate rather than barn doors. But, oh well. He's selling it cheap because of elec issue that drains the battery, so it won't hold power. He was given the truck in it's non-running condition and knows nothing about Suburbans. He says the engine was recently replaced by the guy who gave it to him. I'm looking for a deal not a headache. I am not a mechanic, but a tinkered. I can muddle through the little stuff, but am afraid I might take on more than I can handle. Elec is not my forte. I am looking to the community for advice as to whether or not this is a little problem, making this a deal, or a big problem making it a headache. Thanks.

Unless you are Finnegan or Freiburger and like Roadkill type road trips with an unknown vehicle this may not be the one for you.

Still with that being said a 6.2 Burb of that vintage don't have any major computer controls, so the electrical draw is probably something self induced like a crappy stereo install. Or it could be just a battery with a dead cell that won't hold a charge or an alternator that won't charge. Both could be simply checked at any chain parts store pretty easily. It could be the glow plug system too, but you would have to check it out.

I'd be more worried about the idea that the engine was replaced recently but it still didn't run. That still could be your electrical issue or the injection system wasn't timed correctly when installed, glow plug system fried or worst case that the 6.2 is a boat anchor. Lots of variables there. If you are unfamiliar with the 6.2 it might be beyond your tinkering ability.
 
Tough to say without seeing the state of the truck. Wiring is not difficult when you understand what’s going on. There’s likely a short that’s draining the battery. You start with a meter and trace it to the offending circuit and repair. Could be easy or could be a complete nightmare.
 
You are saying non running, but an electrical drain...one does not mean the other. If you can't see and hear it run, then forget it. Sellers are not to be trusted unfortunately, let alone two sellers back.

How about some pictures of underhood and interior? Might give some idea of how hacked up it is.

Imo they don't get much better than the 90-91's, and a diesel in those years is relatively uncommon.
 
Thanks all for the input. That deal was flushed as I brought my impulses under control. But, in favor of a clean '91 3/4 ton much closer. Going with cash in pocket tomorrow.
 
Tech note for anyone else with a similar situation. You can drive a 6.2 truck with a failed electrical system for however long it takes to cease having 12 volts at the injection pump. This can be hundreds of miles, as long as you don't need to crank it over again. My wife once did 200 miles without an alternator and didn't notice until after she stopped and tried to restart it. Replaced the alternator, begged a jump, and the truck was ready to roll again.
