Have an old worn out 10 bolt axle in my 90 Suburban and not real sure I want to fix it? Is there any better rear diff that would bolt in this? Got to keep the five lug wheels. Any 12 bolts or better built from someone aftermarket?

Is the 12 bolt even worth it? I'd like to get something with better wheel bearings.

I had the same issue with my 91. 14 bolt and eight lug front end. Next is the nv4500 and with a little work a nice reliable tow rig.

id just keep the 10 bolt and put new bearings in it...definately the cheapest option. I would recommend the 14 bolt semi-floater, but the 5 lug versions of those are really rare...

What do you use your 2wd Suburban for?

This ^^^

If your a light wheeler, I recommend just rebuilding the 10b. The 12b isn't worth it. A 14bsf in 5 lug?? Never seen one, and 14bffs are a dime a dozen around here. I can hit a golfball into a junkyard and smack 5 prolly.

If you get another axle, you'll probably need to re-gear it and rebuild it anyway.

454 SS had a 5 lug 14bsf

Why? Since he only has one drive axle on a 2WD anyways.. :doah::D

Ha! So my only option is a rare rear end from a rare truck... :doah:
Could probably find one in the rust/salt belt but here would be hard to part a truck like that with no rust.

It's pretty shot, both wheel bearings have play. So there's 2 axles and bearings, needs brakes, 3:73 gears are questionable till I get under there and look. So yeah it's a total rebuild? Bout 140K on it.

Truck is 2WD street truck so not even light wheelin. But does haul loads and does haul travel trailer.

14 bolt would be obvious choice if it were an eight lug, I should just put one in and find eight lug front stuff. Sounds like a lot of work... Why a five lug half ton came with towing package I don't know. :dunno:

What's to complain about what you had and why do you feel the need to upgrade anything?

Decided the old girl has been to good to me for last 12 years and going to do some work and upgrades instead of a newer truck. The rear axle is a main concern and major cost.

Old travel trailer = 18 feet

New travel trailer 32 foot

The ten bolt rebuilt would probably be fine. But why miss an opertunity to upgrade?

Are there any 14 bolts semi float available?

Wait that 454SS was a 90 truck, this is a 90 Suburban Square body, are the rear axles the same? Is that really the only option?

Youd have to move perches and shock mounts.

Again, just put a dual pattern ford 9 in it. Honestly most any semi float axle can be redrilled for different lug patterns.

I fail to see the "upgrade" if the rear wheel bearings are the concern, just about all 5 lug rear ends have the same sized bearings and are semi-floating,even an SF 3/4 ton one is too, though the larger diameter bearings and axle shafts do add weight capacity--but if an axle snaps,it still lets the rim and tire fly off--only "upgrade" is the diff carriers higher strength, not so much the axle shafts.......might as well get a full floating axle ---or a bigger truck,if the trailer being too much for it is the concern,really..............................................................................................................................................................................................I know of a guy who uses a 70's Suburban C-10 with a 454 to tow his car trailer, and camping trailer that are both over 20 feet long and very heavy, back and forth to Florida many times with no issues though,on its stock axles..he had to use a weight distributing hitch to avoid sway problems, that was about all he did to it though...if the trailer is loaded right, there shouldn't be much additional weight on the rear axle anyway, and tandem wheels will help a lot too...

Just sayin, does he want to keep 3.73s or stick with whatever the new axle has. I never trust anything mechanical I buy used, therefore I'd want to rebuild the new axle, and back to square one he goes.

454 SS had a 5 lug 14bsf
Not saying they don't exist :D just saying 14bff are plentiful. :woot:

and yes, 5 lug "full-size" trucks are silly :doah:

I was just goofin with ya anyways, figured you thought it was a 4wd due to your wording in that post. :D

Dont know their width and bolt pattern but there is the rear jeep dana 60 that came in the jeep j20's. I think they are actually dana 61's or something like that. But only slightly less rare than the 5 lug 14blt sf... I like the idea of the 9" myself.
