how do you remove and install a new windshield gasket? 90 suburban Im gonna paint it this week and removed all the rear windows. I just dont want to pull the windshield...just the seal.
At the base of the windshield, in the center is a small metal tab...pry that out. Then you'll see a ropy looking thing in the windshield rubber...pull that out. Now you should be able to lift the outer edges of the windshield gasket to get paint under it, but the windshield stays put.
Frankly I'd just pull the damn thing out, you might be glad you did as there are often the beginnings of rust issues under the seal.
My plan is to have a mobile guy come out and remove my front glass...then after paint pay to have it properly re-installed. I have removed and re-installed a K5 windshield once. I cracked it getting it out, then cracked it in another place putting it back in.
Well the PO thought it would be good to pint all the rubber window gaskets white and put the most god awfull paint job Ive ever seen. Every panel has severe runs. Anyway My plan is to remove all window gaskets and replace them. My real question is do I have to remove the windshield to remove the gasket. (is it like the rear windows) ??? Or is it just an outer gasket? If it actually holds the windshield in then I will just trim it to paint and have the glass man r&r after the paint.
I've replaced my windshield gasket and it was a breeze. It's good to get it out and check out the metal around for rust. The previous owner of my truck decided to stick some kind of sealant in there and it was leaking. It took me longer to remove all that junk than it did to pull and replace the glass with the new seal.
You can`t remove just the gasket, the glass sits in it. If you`re going to paint it, I`d pull them both out, and check the channel for rust. I`ve installed them before, not that hard, just need dish soap and some string. I need to do the one in my K30, and the side glass in the Burb, they are the same type of seal.
It seems the best thing is to pull the metal tab and pull out the "roapy thing" then since Im replacing the gasket any way I cut the gasket so I can sand and paint well into the area. Its best to leave the windshield in while painting because its a pain to mask the hole. Im getting ready to start a build thread on the "Bourbon" real soon.
