I'm looking at buying a '90 Suburban 2500 2WD truck that is just down the street from me. It has a 454 under the hood. He's got the original window sticker that shows a 7.4L V-8 as original equipment, yet all the websites I've checked list only 5.7L gas or 6.2L diesel motors as being available in '90. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is?

I'll bet the websites you're looking at are showing engines available for 4WD. GM never installed a 454 into a 4WD suburban but they did in a 2WD suburban.

The 454 was only available in 2WD Burbs (as well as the 350 and the 6.2L.)

4WD's could only get the 350 or dizzle.

Any idea why no 454 in the 4x4 versions?
My guess: 454 was the "towing motor" and 2wd was the towing platform back then. The solid axle ride and handling wasn't good enough to make a 454 4x4 subby a good idea.

My thoughts.
