90mph and no brakes or steering...

Isnt that little gold can thing on the hydrobooster unit supposed to hold enough pressure for you to apply the brakes one or two more times if you lose power steering pressure for whatever reason?

I still don't see a problem here... You lost your power steering pump but you still had manual brakes and steering. Steering at 70mph is easy as pie with or without power assist. You make it sound like your draglink fell off and your master cylinder blew apart.

You don't see a problem? :eek1:

I was on a two lane highway, passing a big rig in the oncoming traffic lane, on a long, gradual sweeping left hand bend, going 85-90mph and you don't see a problem?!

The steering wasn't really the issue, brakes more than anything. Trying to get myself out of the oncoming traffic lane, back into my lane, slowed down, and off the road in rush hour traffic that was the eye opener. If I had known it was coming, I could have prepared for it, but I didn't know. It happened out of the blue, with no warning. That makes a big difference.

You make it sound like your draglink fell off and your master cylinder blew apart.

Yeah I still don't see a problem

Hey, come get all the crap you left in my truck...

for those wondering...

To my knowledge the only automatics you can push start are the early ones in the 50's cars that had a rear pump that ran off the drive shaft ,in addition to the one behind the torque converter..the cast iron powerglides were about the last ones to be set up that way..later tranny's like the Aluminum Powerglide,TH-350-400,etc,have no rear pump..so only the engine can drive the rear wheels..the wheels cannot turn the engine,as there is no hydraulic pressure to apply the clutches and bands...

What puzzles me is I've had cars with powerglides and TH-350-400's stall on the highway, and I swore it felt like the car tried to jump start itself like a manual tranny equipped one would(they would downshift into first and make the motor speed up,as you pulled off the roadway!)..but if somone pushes you, nothing will happen, even if you get it up to 60 mph..must have been residual pressure engauging the clutches until the motor stopped turning completely..

I don't like the fact on a diesel you lose power brakes AND steering if a belt snaps or a P/S hose blows!..I've had it happen, and its a lot harder to stop the truck than manual brakes--I sincerely doubt I could ever get the wheels to lock without the hydro-boost working..I stood up off the seat,it hardly slowed down at all!..and then I noticed the steering was super stiff too!--this was with my plow blade on too,to add to my horror..good thing I was only going 40 or so,and nobody cut me off!..:eek1:

I see far too many "cheep" fan belts that are like rubber bands at the discount parts stores..I prefer Gates,Dayco,or Goodyear if I can afford them..sometimes you cant afford NOT too...

Good to know about the powerglide thing. I didn't know anything about it, just that I'd heard about it. At least now I won't find myself in a situation someday where I'm trying to drag a TH350 down the road. :doah:

I could lock up my 44's on pavement without power brakes. I did have to stand on them but it's possible.

Which brings me to a technical question... what if my truck with an auto dies while going down a steep grade? Will the transmission still spin the engine to make enough vacuum for my brakes to work? I guess it's time to experiment...

.

If you've got the gear lever in 2nd, it should. I've tried it a few times in an auto-equipped truck. Be going down a hill, drop the auto into second to get plenty of engine braking, and out of curiosity turned off the ignition briefly to see what would happen. Motor continued to turn, but I turned the ignition back on because the transmission driving the engine like that and everything can't be good for it.

wow that suks i lost my brakes coming up to a 90 degree turn when i was trying to slow downfrom about 80 with about a 1 ton load of wood

Coming home from a nice dinner with the GF, a vacuum hose plug fell off and every time I would hit the brakes the engine would stall. Thank god for engine braking with my stick! I also learned that the emergency brake does jack **** when trying to slow your truck down from 35mph.
