Anyone want to gamble on what drivetrain I can find in a 91 3/4 ton 4x4 burb that I am looking at? Its got a 6.2 diesel in it... but that shouldn't matter much on the trans, xfer, axles, etc should it? I would like to know:

1. (first and foremost)IFS or live axle?
2. 8-lug 10bolt, or D44?
3. rear axle? 12b 14BSF/FF?
4. what tranny? 400 or 700? ewwww... 700... /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif
5. finally, how hard is it to locate new barn doors? The current owners say that the rear doors are "rusty"... but the rest of the truck is okay.

Any advice or knowledge welcome. I'm also looking for reasons to NOT buy a diesel... because if no one can convince me otherwise, I will be buying one soon. I've heard the 6.2s are weak tow motors, so how about the 6.5TD?

Thanks again all!

I'll take a gamble...

91 is the last year for straight axle. 3/4 ton would be 8 lug 10 bolt up front with 30 spline axles. Rear would be either a SF14 or a FF 14. I'd lean towards the FF due to the diesel. It would likely have the 700R-4.

I think the barn doors are more common, so they should be easy.

The 6.2 is junk...you should give it to me/forums/images/icons/wink.gif/forums/images/icons/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Hehehehehe! I have a huge delimma (sp?) here because folks are telling me that the 6.2 won't serve me well as a tow rig. My only thought on that is this: as long as it is equal to or better than towing with a 350, then I am fine. I really am more concerned with mileage, vs passing ease when towing. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif I can deal with moving slowly (contrary to popular belief!)

Damn... I was hoping for a real axle in the front, not another 10b... /forums/images/icons/frown.gif Could it be a D44?

The 6.2 makes more torque at a lower rpm than a stock 350 so it should tow just fine...better than a 350 IMO. It won't set any speed records but it isn't as slow as most people make em out to be. I rode in CanmoreK5's diesel pick-up and it went quite good...prolly equal to a 305 powered truck.

The last year for the D44 was 78 IIRC. The 30 spline 10 bolt is equally strong though so it's kind of a moot point. Both are good when used within their limits.

No IFS on 91. It was the last year for solid axles. My sheet for 91s shows tranny to be 700R4 up to 8600 GVWR; over that is the 4L80E. Also shows 3:73 standard/4:10 optionals. If 4:10, it implies it's FF. Could be either SF or FF with 3:73. Check the glove box. Should be a LL4 code for 8501-10,000 GVWR and LH5 for 'up to 8500'.
I swapped 4:10 FF in my 91 1/2 ton and it tows much better now! (350).

So then, I should be able to tow my ~5800lb K5 with trailer without problems with this 3/4 ton 4WD 6.2 diesel-powered burb? Guess I will be looking for the 10KGVW codes! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif Think I am safe here, or should I be going BIGGER?!!!

you know if that diesel doesnt have enough power you could always put a banks kit on it. Check the diesel page, some of those guys really know how to make those things run.

Well, nobody I know ever has complained about having TOO MUCH truck for towing!
trailering they show the 6.2-3.08 combo @ 9000; 3:42 @ 10K, 4:10 @ 12K @ 4.56 @ 13,500 (GCWR - Combined, loaded truck & trailer). I'd make sure & have some good coolers.

Hmmm.... nothing on the 3.73 gearset? Seems like 3.73 and 4.10s are the common ones. So its either ????GCWR with the 3.73s, or 12000GCWR with the 4.10s. Looks like I will have to find some 4.10's! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif But if the gears define GCWR, then sounds like the rest of the truck should be up for the task if its in decent condition... so I'll go with the assumption that the 3/4 burb is a decent tow vehicle for 12K GCWR. Now its just about that darn 6.2L diesel... and I have heard of the Banks turbo too... found a used one last weekend for $150 complete! Wonder if its still available?

The front will be a 8 lug 10bolt. t-case will be a 241. I would bet money on the rear as a 14 BOLT SF. The tranny would be a guess, but if it has no over drive it's a 400.

I agree with you about the 14SF. There's a Burb' around here with a diesel and a 14SF. It's for sale too, but $6500 is kinda pricey. It also has a TH400 and an 8 lug 10 bolt.

Let me try my hand at this. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Front axle definitely will be the 10 bolt, with 30 splines.
Rear axle will definitely be the 14 SF. I'm leaning towards 3.42 or 3.73 ratios.
Tranny will be the 400, and if not, and you're lucky, the 4L80E.
T-case will be the 241.

The last year for the D44 front axle was '82 only in the GMC line. Chevy's last year for the D44 was '79.

It WILL have the 4L80E.
It should have a SF14 bolt, 6.5TD and 454s got the FF in 3/4 tons.
I would rather have found mine with a 6.2, but couldn't pass up the deal I got on it /forums/images/icons/grin.gif .
