Tried searching, but no luck so far. My brake light started flashing... 6 short flashes followed by one long flash. Can't find my book, but I'm assuming it's an abs code. Any help is appreciated!

Yes, it's the ABS system; 1990-91 have a rear-wheel only ABS (only runs in 2WD.)

I don't know what the code is; IIRC there are two or three types. One's Kelsey-Hayes, as evidenced by a KH on the magic box (up by the booster/master cylinder). I don't recall the others, but I seem to recall that the codes may differ between them :(

Yeah, in searching I've found one site that says it would be an abs code 61, and another says it would be read as a code 7? I do know the abs is no longer working because I locked all four wheels up this morning in the snow at work testing it out. I'm not sure if it's worth fixing if it's not something simple, the rwal system has never performed well... I'd almost argue that it has almost gotten me in trouble in ice storms!!! Thanks I'll keep searching, I'll post up if I find anything.

Everyone I've known with the RWABS system -- which, I might add, is precisely two people including myself :haha: -- has bypassed it by unplugging the module.

My '90 has it, seems like it works...and now you know exactly three people with RWABS in a square body. :D

I probably should be fixing the ABS in my girlfriends k5 but here's a little help for 'ya :D

PROCEDURE
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) 's can be displayed by jumping terminals "A" and "H" of the Data Link Connector and observing the flashing of the "BRAKE" warning light. This should only be done when the brake lamp is "ON".
The terminals must be jumped for about 20 seconds before the code will begin to flash. Count the number of short flashes starting from the long flash. Include the long flash as a count. Sometimes the first count sequence will be short. However, subsequent flashes will be accurate. If there is more than one failure, only the first recognized code will be retained and flashed.

NOTES:

  • DTC's 6,9, and 10 will only turn the "BRAKE" lamp on while the fault exists. These are soft codes faults and can only be read with the Tech 1 scan tool.
  • Do not jump terminals "A" to "H" if the "BRAKE" lamp is not on. Jumping the terminals with the "BRAKE" lamp off will set a false DTC 9. This will turn the "BRAKE" lamp on and disable the antilock system.

Keep this in mind if you decide to disable it. If you are subjected to emissions testing like we are here in California the vehicle would FAIL a test instantly if the SES or ABS light is either not functioning or is on. :deal:

Your state laws may vary but i would check into it BEFORE you go removing it or disabling it.

IIRC, when I unplugged the brain on mine, the light stayed off and only came on with the lever and the combo valve like it should.

There is no ABS light on these trucks though. It just uses the brake light.

So unless the tech notices the lack of the light at startup (doubt they will, as the light shoudl be on for the ebrake), you should be ok. Only way you would fail woudl be if they released the ebrake, started the truck, and didnt' see the light come on in test mode.
