Hey Guys,

I'm looking at picking up a 6.2 turbo diesel Blazer. Every looks great, except for the transmission issue. Apparently it won't shift into 3rd and 4th. It has the 700R4. The guy says it's probably the governor. I can get this truck for about 2k. Is it worth it and would it be a simple/cheap fix?

Thanks

My 91 gas Blazer won't shift into 3/4 and I was told it is the clutch pack.

If it is the governor, and that is an easy fix, please do describe how I can test...

I'm not sure the guy knows what he's talking about... My tranny lost 3/4 back in December on the way back from a trip and when they went in to rebuild the tranny they said the 3/4 clutch pack was complete toast. Check to see if the fluid is red and clear or if it's dark and cruddy. My fluid went to dark and blackish the instant I lost 3/4.

I found a local shop to rebuild for $1400 (700R4) so the fix isn't exactly cheap, but for $2k if the rest of the truck is solid, it's worth a buy.

Yeah, that'd be a problem though. I don't really want to put that much more money into it. I wouldn't mind fixing it myself, even though I don't know much about it.

Thanks

It'd be the governor if it didn't get out of first most of the time, going from 2-3, if it doesn't make it into 3rd gear, it needs rebuilt. I went through this a few times already with a couple 700's in the past.

I personally wouldn't pay that much for it without a trans though.

No third or fourth= bad trans. If you are looking to buy be sure and get some rebuild quotes locally from reputable builders and factor those prices into your negotiation.

If you like the 700r4, then rebuild it if you have the time and tools. It's not hard to do....just time consuming if you haven't done it before.

A 91 K5 w. a turbo diesel is somewhat of a rare bird. If it was near me, I would take a shot with it if the body is in good shape and it ran good. Especially since I have a 0 mile remanned 700R4 in storage. If you need a tranny for it, PM me.

I bought my 85 Burb cheap because it has similar 700R4 woes--has lost reverse after a 20+ mile ride before, and wont go into O/D ,or at least stay in if it tries upshifting...
I assume any automatic that has issues like these "junk" and expect to have to replace or rebuild it--it aint often a 700R4 acts up and can be "fixed" with a simple adjustment of the TV cable or a fluid change, usually they are good or junk,no in between...mine has had reverse work fine in my driveway ,but it would probably lose it after a good ride--the previous owner only tried dumping the old fliud out (that looked like charcoal !) and put the pan back on it,after using brake cleaner to wash the pan and filter off (didn't bother to replace the filter!)--then dumped a quart of Lucas trans treatment in it ,drove it only a few times after that before I bought it from him...

I have been keeping my eyes open for a cheap "good used" tranny for it,so far I have seen a few for 200 bucks or so on Craigslist, but haven't bothered to go after them, due to the fact its easy to get "taken" when buying one that you cant test drive and pull out yourself...I've considered going to a TH400 or a TH350 instead,I dont really need overdrive, and I'm not a big fan of 700r4's,they just dont seem to last long --but if I can find one reasonable I know will work,it IS a lot easier to bolt back what came out of the truck...

If the govenor gear was stripped, you'd only get first gear & reverse....usually when the higher gears (thiird and O/D) start going out or slipping, etc, its a death sentence for a 700R4....
