Hello, I've been gone for a while. I hope everyone is wrenching on and enjoying their rigs. A year or so ago I rebuilt the front end on my burb twice. What I mean is I replaced everything but the upper and lower ball joints to include power steering gear and pump. This didn't help the play in the steering wheel.
A while later I torn it apart again and replaced the upper and lower ball joints, this didn't help either(alignment also). The burb tracks straight doesn't pull but has too much play in the steering wheel. I have too over correct when going through a turn and it su*ks. I can move the steering wheel from the 10 o'clock to the two and the wheels don't move.
I'm thinking the steering box from O'reileys is junk. Id like to buy a quality replacement one but the O'reileys has a lifetime warrenty I think. Does anyone know if the after market rebuilt are all the same. I searched and read 15% are junk. Thanks M4:mad:

Sounds like you just need to adjust the box. There are two adjustments that need to be made which should eliminate any free play in the box. One is done at the input shaft location and the other is done at the sector shaft cover. Get yourself a Chiltons manual and it explains how to make both of those adjustments. The only other thing that can cause play is a bad "rag" joint (where the steering shaft connects to the steering box). A good upgrade for that is the XJ steering shaft which uses u-joints on both ends elinating the rubber joint.

I'll look at the rag joint and the gear box adjusting procedures. Thanks

Search on here for XJ steering shaft. Definitely worth the $35 or less to do that upgrade. Should help.

I work in a different state than where my Burb lives, so when I return Sunday I'll look at the rag joint. Will I see slop in the rag joint connection. Not sure if I can find a XJ steering shaft in time for vacation but I need to. Thanks for everyones help. M4

If you have that much slop in the steering wheel it should be pretty easy to see where it is coming from.

Update on Burb!
Finally have some free time, When I turn the steering wheel with the engine off, the front drag link has play in it. I know I replaced it in 2005 and it's a Moog. It's a lifetime warrenty part so I'll change tomorrow. Do I need to center the Pittman arm as far as equal turns left and right? Thanks M4
