Went to look at one today and was a little confused about thre running gear. I forgot to look at the rims and tires but it did have the full dish hubcaps on it. It didnt have a 14 bolt in it but it did have what a thought was a 4l80 in it with a np241?. It was also eguipped wjth quad shocks in front. So my question then is,is it a 4l80 or a 700r4 and would the axles be 3/4 ton or like a heavy half? This was a unmolested truck andeverything was original. The rear looked big but was not a 12 bolt. :dunno: thanxs

That Suburban has a 14 bolt semi-floater I would bet. The center section isn't as big as the full floater, but it's bigger than a 12 bolt center section. Just like you thought, it's more of a heavy-half ton rear since it still uses C-clips to retain the axle shafts.

The tranny is going to be a 4L80. 1991 was the first year that GM put an overdrive tranny in a 3/4 ton Suburban. Previous years came with a th400. The 4L80 is as strong as a th400, but with the added benefit of a 4th gear.

OK thats good news since he has a receipt for 1600 bucks in 2004 for it and it has 220 miles since then. The truck is not running and he thinks it needs a motor{thats what his mechanic says} but the body is solid and interior is pretty good. Could I use this tranny as a back up to my 91 4wd cc dually that has a 4l80 and a 205?

yes that trans will work as a back up for your dually. they're the same engine and trans in both trucks.
