Wahoo,Ne
I bought a already semi built rig off of shane a couple weeks ago.

I plan on building off of what was already done.

Here is his build thread if interested. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=299674

I bought a lock right for the front also a new t-case chain.

Made the 35 mile drive from my shop to my house!

Removed the t-case to see what the noise was. Unfortunately I didn't find what I was hoping for. I figured the chain was rubbing on the case in which it's not....

So the new chain will be here today or tomorrow.

What would sound like a dragging chain when you let off the gas?? When on the pedal its quit. When you let off it sounds terrible.

I will add more when I have time.

Nick

Also before I put it in the garage I backed out of my driveway then put it in gear and when I took off I heard what sounded like a loud back fire. Pretty sure it wasn't a back fire.

After this the trans didn't want to shift out of first. It's suppose to be a new tran so i'm unsure of what the issue could be.

That's weird about the loud back fire noise.

I had the trans do that to me right after I put it in. Did some research on it before I messed with anything. I read that the valves (or something like that) can get clogged with junk after a rebuild. It suggested to get on a long straight road and floor it in reverse 3 or 4 times for a couple seconds each. Well, I tried that and after the third time it shifted like normal. :dunno: I just assumed there was some junk in there.

Hopefully someone who knows better will chime in.

Any chance the noise you're hearing is from noisy gears in the diff? I've got noisy gears and have a pretty gnarly gear whine when I let off the fuel.

There's a hole in the floor from when I clocked up the tcase. I've driven it without the cover before, and it sounds like it's coming right from the tcase.

It has made that noise with 2 other tcases besides that one, so I guess the diff couldn't be ruled out. Although, I had the diff completely rebuilt when I went to 4.56 gears, and it still made the noise.

My gears are basically brand new, too. I used US Standard Gear parts, which are known to be "noisy." Their gears are cheap because they don't do whatever process is necessary to quiet them down. The noise that I get doesn't sound like it's back as far as the diff because it travels up the driveline.

Interesting...

Does it just do it when coasting and at higher speeds? Does it go away if you keep a load on the drivetrain?

I've heard noisy rears before and this isn't that type of sound.

It literally sounds like the chain is dragging even though I know it's not.

I heard driveline angles can cause the sound. It's just strange.

Once I get the t-case back in I'm going to run it on jack stands to get a better idea of where its coming from.

Trans was kinda low on fluid, not enough that it would give me issues. Just strange how good it shifted all the way home and then the next day it gives me issues.

What type of rear shaft do you have? You said it was a 241 with the stock slip yoke right? How far is the yoke pulled out? Also, is it a normal 2-joint shaft or a CV shaft? How does the pinion look on the rearend (pointed at tcase or parallel with ground/output of tcase)? I had a similar kind of noise when I let off the gas. When on the throttle, it was fine, but when I let off, it was a "grinding" sound (that is the best way I can describe it). But once I went to a SYE and I did a CV rear shaft, it went away completly.

I found out in my research that for one, if the slip is pulled out too far, it can cause vibrations. Also, for a CV shaft, you want the pinion of the rearend to be pointed directly at the output of the tcase. I guess just some things to think about as you start your search

Rear shaft is stock with 2 joint.

I think you are on to something. The yoke is out quite a bit if I remember. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to that while removing it.

Thanks for the info!

Shane and I talked about the rear shaft being the culprit last night. I mean it makes sense.

Yea. There isn't a whole lot of spline engagement compared to stock - probably 2 to 3 inches more pulled out.

I would put money on that as your problem. Like I said, it sounds almost identical to what I was having before I made the changes I talked about. You could just get the shaft lengthened and mabe shim the rear pinion down (if it is pointed up), that would probably be the cheapest option, but I think a CV shaft is the better route for a bit more $. Whatever works in your budget.

I just had to comment though because I remember going through the same progression as you. I thought it was tcase and chain until I did some more research, decided to go with shaft and it ended up fixing it :waytogo:. I do get a couple small noises here and there but that is the detroit in the rear. That rig looks good, I remember seeing it before on this site

What the heck, Adam. You couldn't have spoken up while I owned the rig??? :haha:

Interesting...

Does it just do it when coasting and at higher speeds? Does it go away if you keep a load on the drivetrain?

I tend to not get any gear noise below 40MPH. At higher speeds only when coasting and most prominently when you let off the gas. It does go away when keeping a load on the drivetrain. It has something to do with gear backlash.

I may have... but probably not.

I agree, the bumpers were great. I was planning on narrowing it, which is why I sold them. Would have been easier to make new ones rather than try to narrow those.

Alright, back on topic. Sorry for derailing your thread, Nick.

Got the new chain on?

Bumpers are on the list! Nothing special though. Going to be pretty lw profile.

Chain didn't come in today, go figure!

Things on my list are

-Get the new chain in
-New driveshaft
-Figure out the trans issue
-Bumpers
-Install the lock right
-New blower motor
-Get a roll cage
-Get the stereo to work
-Go out and wheel the piss out of it
-Fix what I break then repeat lol
