i have a 91 k5 and right now it is on 35s with a 6" lift but im wondering how big i can go with out replacing the stock axles with stronger onea...eventually i want to get some 1tons under it but not just yet. would 8" lift n 38" tires be too big?
thanks for your help

Your already pushing the limit IMO. Depends on how heavy a foot you have on the gas peddle and what kind of wheeling you do. That determines your limits. Ive got built 10bolts and Im only running 33s w/ 2" lift, Id luv to go 35s, but I dont want to push it.

Do you wheel the truck? If not, go for it. I run a 5" lift with 40" tires. I take it offroad though. If it is just for looks, just keep it so it doesn't turn over when you take a corner.

ive ran 38s on 1/2 ton axles for about 5 years. about 2 of those years they were under a burb. you just have to remember you have 1/2 tons under there and be easy on them, ease into and off the throttle. i only broke one front axle shaft. also had to replace ball joints and bearings about once a year

its all bout how you drive it. some people can make 38's last with 10b (on the street) and other beat the crap out of them and break them on stock 31's.

I hate 10b's! I had 2 break in the rear of my K5 when it was still stock within 2 years. And it had never been off-road. Personally, if you're gonna go bigger i'd say save up and move up to a 14b rear.

Ive been running 35" toyo mt open countrys for a little over 20k miles over the coarse of almost 5 years. my stock 10bolts are runnin like a dream, had to change out the ball joints bearings and a bunch of other stuff but 22 years of rollin around will do that.

The problem however IMO is that ya gotta take care of that tranny, if your runnin a 700r4 like i am on an np208 then be careful ive burrned through three trannys cause i was negligent and didnt service my tranny. got a temp gauge and im on top of now!

I guess what im sayin is if your gonna keep the 10b regear them to keep up with all that tire

36x14.50x15 parnelli jones destroyed my stock rear end goin up a sand dune a STOCK jeep went up...well maybe it was a LITTLE to much throttle...but i made the switch to 14 bolt rear n dana 60 front...now i need to upgrade to 35 splines n i'll be good...

also twisted my driveshaft like a pretzel...n that was w/3.42 gears...

no i havent regeared them since i am looking to just put new ones under it. well i have a new tranny in there, well about 6 mo 8 mo old now so i keep up with that. for now it is just for looks, im not going to wheel it.. too much without the stronger axels, im lookin to buy them sometime within the next 2-3 mo maybe sooner, just gotta find em but i have someone who wants to buy the 35s off my truck now so thats why i am wondering if i can go bigger without switching just for a few months. i am not heavy on the petal at all and i baby my baby.

awesome man do ya gotta a tranny temp gauge? its worth the small investment shouldnt be more the eighty or so bucks with all the necessary mounts and wires. i only ask cause i cook three trannys cause i didnt realize what was goin on in thier. and i didnt check the fluid cause they all burned out in less the 5k so i never bothered to check the fluid. my bad though so i got a tranny temp gauge and check my fluid religously!

I felt I should be safe instead of sorry, and went to 3/4 ton before I got 35s.
The weak point is going to be your rear diff, as the front 10 bolt is fairly sturdy up to 38s, and so long as you don't act like a moron.
But 38s on a rear 10, with high gearing is like having an IED in the back of your truck. It's not IF it's going to grenade, it's WHEN.
My theory was that I'd have no problem dragging a 2" thick pumpkin with 35s, so long as I knew the diff wouldn't randomly explode if I was wheeling properly.

no i don't have a tranny temp gauge but ill have to grab one up. any certain brand? thanks. oh btw its miss :wink1: thats why i have so many questions lol im trying to learn a lil more bout my truck so i dont always need the boys

ive got an autometer trans temp gauge, just picked it up last week, gatta get it in the truck once i swap tranny's

I went to summit racing and bought a PermaCool kit that came with an external filter and gauge. Works pretty good, no complaints. But from what I've been told it's much better to locate the sensor to the pan for really accurate monitoring
