Looking through my LMC catalog trying to find an instrument cluster for my 91. However I noticed none of the components were listed fo a 91. Then I came across a statement in the catalog that said, GM changed to a complete instrument cluster in 1991 no components are available. Does this mean I'm up the creek? My cluster is beaten to pieces from the previous owner.

Not sure if there is any reproduction clusters but I have one. If you are interested pm me.

90 & 91 use an electric speedometer and these clusters are a lot different from older versions.

I wouldn't say it's impossible but you'd only be able to do it with the major components (shell, printed circuit & speedo) from a 90 or 91. I would think the other gauges would interchange with earlier trucks but I'm not sure.

Or..... Convert it to an earlier cable driven speedo and repin the plug going to the cluster.

It really all depends on what the finished truck will be like. Going back all factory or...? The original type computer will want the speedo signal for the trans and who knows what else. If it's a wheeler with a bunch of swapped in parts (like my 91) you can go with the older speedo and fake it. The factory TBI can be customized for no trans control, no computer distributor, etc. .

Just buy a used one. '90-91 are pretty much identical to each other, although there appears to be some difference in the charge indicator light. I've been paying $25 for used 90-91 clusters.

As stated, the '90-91 cluster housing and flexible circuit are quite a bit different than earlier, however all the gauges but the clock and speedometer interchange from earlier with electric gauges. (not mechanical like some of the earlier 70's stuff)

Not really a good idea to go backwards IMO, the newer stuff will have fewer years on it, so less likely to have problems for awhile anyways. Some people have had issues with factory gauges, I've yet to have any except a mechanical speedometer fail. And I've been through 15 or so clusters/components testing. I do like the electric speedometer far better than mechanical (no cable to fail or get in the way, plus it reads over 100K miles, and all have a trip odometer) but that's mainly personal preference.

Also IMO, *ALL* these clusters are prone to issues related to the flexible circuit, as it was a cheap, non-rugged design back in 1973, and nothing changed to make that better up through 1991. Which is why I hard-wired all my gauges. I was sick of the ridiculous intermittent issues like the high beam indicator working when it wanted to. Even worse if you actually put your dash back together and have to rip it completely down due to a bad contact at the instrument panel (IP) connector. Pics are dead, but I can probably zip them in a file and provide if anyone wants. Or put them on photobucket and make the links work again https://ck5.com/forums/threads/hard-wiring-stock-instrument-cluster.304941/
