getting like 18.70V. looked at all i can think of. everything else seems ok... needs some ideas thanks for the help

As far as i know, the only think that could cause that is a bad alternator regulator. I think you get to replace your Alt. There may be a way to replace the regulator by itself, but i personally would just get a new alt.
 
It'd be an internal regulator, so it's time for a new alt...

thanks guys going to get it out and have it rebuilt

I'm curious to see what people's opinions on this are. I've always just bought new or reman ones from kragen. Unless you are getting some sort of upgraded rebuild job done, it might be a lot easier to buy from a store.

Wonder what others opinions are?
 
I've used a local rebuilder in the past with much better luck than remans from a chain store. That said, it's a lot easier to just buy a reman and put it in. Most rebuilders are closed weekends and take a little more time to rebuild your part (not very long though). The beauty of rebuilders is that you KNOW the part is good when you put it back on, and they can rebuild oddball or obsolete parts that aren't available reman. With store reman crap, I've had to go throught 2 or 3 ona occasion to get a good one.:crazy:
 
thats what i have had to deal with. that why i got to a re builder i trust him.
 
Definately a bad regulator. At this point you have 3 options, buy another stock alternator, buy a regulator and swap it in, or upgrade to a high output alternator. If you don't have a need for a high output alternator then i would price a regulator and an alternator and do whichever is cheapest (assuming you can replace the regulator yourself). The regulator is easy to change but some people have never opened an alternator and or are afraid to do so. The hardest part (there's a trick to it) is getting the brushes back in the holder while you reassemble the alternator.
 
I use a rebuilder....

that being said, you have to watch, they are all not created equal.... we have one guy local that is awesome and very economical, and one guy who's chit sets stuff on fire...
 
Speaking of alternators, i have a 140amp unit that quit working on me years ago and i needed another in a hurry so i just bought a stock unit to replace it. I think i'll drag this unit out and repair it and put it back in my rig and keep my current one as a back-up.

Good thing i ended up with the alternator/generator/starter tester from the parts store when they closed back in September. :D
