Ok Guys my K5 just made it here. The tail gate glass goes down just fine from the key and the dash switch. However it has no up function.

Working either switch I saw no dimming of the dome lamp so I suspect the circuit is open. Now this safty switch that's build into the latch, is it only for up, down or?? I'm thinking if it only controls up, it sounds like a likely suspect.

I raised my glass via a cordless drill and it ran right up.

Thanks!

Oh, can I just pull the latch and bypass the harness, or can you bypass the harness without having to pull the latch?

On mine there is a small 2 plug disconnect on the driver side of the frame rail in the harness. The bigger orange wire is the hot wire, it was broken off already so I put a female crimp connector on it with a plastic outer housing (so it didnt hit something and arc), and I just unplug the disconnect and run the power to the up/down terminals.

Not a permanent fix, but it was already messed up.

But there must be a power wire elsewhere because with the connector plugged together I can still move the glass up with the dash switch (just found this out this past summer after 4 years owning the rig lol).

My thoughts is if the switch in the latch ONLY cuts out raise and not lower that's a good place to start on my rig .

The switch that is in the driver side latch only allows power when the tailgate is latched closed. Cuts power when it is down.

I also removed this switch as it was broken, and allows me to open the glass onto a set of saw horses so I can clean inside the tailgate and lube everything now and then.

Edit: I didnt remove the switch, I just cut the wires and spliced them together and re installed the latch/switch.

Hmmm ok so with my window working from both switches in the down position I doubt this switch is the problem.
Are the Up and Down fused independently?

That I am not sure man. There is a great thread here about most all info on the tail gates. Let me find it.

Sweet. My schematic says 1 30a feeds front and rear switches. I'll read up on your link thank you.

I think both wires are hot - 1 up, 1 down. Ground is through the motor case>tailgate hinges>body. A lot of people run a dedicated ground for better performance since the hinges can get rusty and weaken the ground. It's on my to-do list.

While you're back there, this motor refurb is also on my to-do list.

Nice PDF. Makes me wonder if I really want to convert it to a manual crank on the rear glass.

Sure enough it was the limit switch in the DS latch. Jumped it out and serviced the reg. All good now. Thanks guys!

I actually solved a problem :eek1:

:haha:

When I figured out how that switch worked, I looked at it and noticed the plastic was cracked and the metal wasn't making contact when it should have.
