91 suburban = 4L80E?

Did all 1991 suburbans with a 4speed auto come with the 4L80E?

I found one on CL with a diesel in it for dirt cheap. Guy doesn't know what trans is in it but says it is a 4speed auto trans.

Were they all converted to the 4L80e that year or would there still be some 700R4's around?
 
I doubt it since the 4l80e was not really introduced until 1991 specifically and was usually reserved for HD applications (like 3/4 ton trucks and larger). You might be working with such a unit seeing as it's a diesel, but its a toss up, seeing as there were a lot more 1/2 ton suburbans with the 700R4/4;60E going up to they started making the 6l60E and 6l80E units as well.

poke your head under it, really easy to tell the difference.
 
yep, know that but i'm about 100 miles from the truck and the owner doesn't seem to know anything about it. I've asked for better pics of the wheels so that will give me an idea of 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton. (as long as axles were not swapped)

I'll figure it out, you guys answered my question on if they were all the better trans or not.
