As the title states, I have a question about the intake gaskets. In particular the coolant flow restrictors in the rear of the intake gasket. Do they need to be there?

The short quick answer is NO, they don't need to be there. I am not using the stock gaskets on my 89 (which factory did use restrictors in the rear) and I haven't had any issues because of it.
