As the title states, I have a question about the intake gaskets. In particular the coolant flow restrictors in the rear of the intake gasket. Do they need to be there? :dunno:

The short quick answer is NO, they don't need to be there. I am not using the stock gaskets on my 89 (which factory did use restrictors in the rear) and I haven't had any issues because of it.
