'92 Camaro RS

The '87 LG4 in the Camaro had a roller cam.

I didn't realize the LG4 made it till 88. I knew the '081 heads were the same as the '416 heads, just updated to the center bolt valve covers and splayed intake bolts but for some reason the retention of the LG4 designation didn't stick.

Well it started up and ran smooth. I let it run for two hours, then drove it a little bit and let it run for another hour. I then let it sit for about 1.5 hours and started up again. It restarted a little rough, but did smooth out after a few seconds. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Only '87 in the Camaro, but yeah, '88 in the Monte Carlo.

Well on Friday before I started the car, I barred the engine over a few revolutions. When I started it, it ran a little rough at first, but cleared up in a few seconds. It ran fine after that.

On Saturday morning, I just went for it and started it up. It ran rough, there was definitely a pushrod/rocker making some noise, but then it smoothed out and got quiet. Cyl #2 I'd bet. I let it run for a bit and then gave it a Seafoam treatment right down the throttle body. I let it sit for a short time, then took it for a drive. I've put around 50 miles on it so far.

Besides the valve that tends to stick when it sits for a while, there are a couple driveability issues that need dealt with. One is a tendency to hunt for idle speed, when it's cool to halfway warmed up. I've unplugged the IAC when it does it, but it still hunts for idle speed. On a whim, I replaced the TPS with a known good one, still acts up though.

The other issue is an off idle stumble or sag. It's pretty darn annoying with a 2.73 gear. It could be related to the code 32 that pops on when driving the car. I've checked the vacuum lines and disconnected the EGR circuit to eliminate that as a possibility. I'll need to dig into this issue deeper.

Going to find an axle with better gears?

Martin
Yeah this. My 94 has a 3.23 and it’s a turd even though it’s way deeper

Easily work a 3.55 or 3.73 with the OD

I have an extra disc rear with 3.23 gears. Whether or not it finds it's way into the car is unknown. I'm trying really hard to make this one a driver and not a project. I've got 4 other Camaro project cars that don't run and I really need to get working on them. I'm ok with this green one being slower than most every new car available today.

Oh it’ll still be slower than the new cars. But 2.73 is a salt flat gear, or a door stop

Lol, I know how they are. My old rusty twin to this car was equipped identically and I put about 100k on it. I've had a couple 2.73 and 2.77 TPI cars as well. I can still have fun with them. Y'all are tying to get me hopping down that "might as well" rabbit hole. I refuse! For now, anyways, lol.

You should refuse the 2.73 and refuse them!

But a rear axle swap is just a few hours with proper planning. Spray the fasteners and brake line connections several times in the weeks before.
Do some quick maintenance on the one going in beforehand..
Then you are just walking close to the rabbit hole... the car is only down for an afternoon.

I won't lie, I soaked all the fasteners when I was under there putting the exhaust on it

So I guess us doing matching L98 swaps is out of the question then....

We'll see how this current boat anchor does first, lol.

I found this key chain in the console. I can't find any info on this Chevy dealer at all. I also don't know why there's another name on the backside. Maybe this dealer gave out personalized key chains to people that bought a new car? No matter where it came from or how it got there, it's pretty cool, imho.

Swapping rear axles is more like a mouse hole. 2.73's suck

Probably get a lot better when she gets couple more tanks of fuel through it, and it completely relearns
