Im thinking of chopping/removing glass from my 92 K5's back section.

Has anyone cut up a 92-99 blazer/tahoe 2door? Ive been searching the internet for about 2-3 hours in total and found a couple cool suburbans with this done, but nothing from the 92+ style at all.

I see that more than half of the back section of my 92 is all glass, so it should shed some weight and gain some MPG I hope aswell.

thanks in advance

There's been pictures posted at least once on this site of a blue one that was done w/ a straight axle, full cage and full convertible. It was pretty killer!

The steel you weld back in will weigh more than the glass, or at the very least you wouldn't see any difference in fuel economy. You're driving a brick ;)

There is one that someone posted here that's sweet; a full convertible conversion cleanly done, on the 92+ body style. All I kept is the pix, so I have no more info for you. (Though damn, looking at these pix again I wanna do one :haha: )

thanks for the pics and info.
Im getting about 15-18mpg with a mix of city/hwy driving.Read somewhere that every 300 pounds you remove gets you 1 mpg improvement.Im not planning to add alot of extra metal and if I do it will be the lightweight braces for the soft top my GF is going to sew up for me.Im also thinking of ditching all rear seats, side panels, carpets and using it like a shortbox.
Also thinking of putting a lightweight front bench seat in for seating for 3 only.bascially gutting the back and just doing what I have to with weight in mind, getting rid of dual walled tailgate with glass for a PU gate.fiberglass hood, fenders, and whatever else.I love every part of the truck and it has been the most reliable $700 truck iver ever heard of selling for so cheap.did 6000kms in 6 days across the USA and it didnt even hiccup, i havent even changed the oil yet, nothing, swapped back to smaller tires as i wanted it stock, sold the 33's for more than the stockers cost, bring my total i am into the truck to about $550...personally i think the engine/tranny are worth $800 alone.
so im going to chop it for fun and im always going to get my $550 back, so thats my logic with this one.i should shed alot of weight, possibly 600-700 pounds with all i plan to remove, might even swap the 350 out and sell it and put in a 4.3, i figure id get about 17 city and 21 hwy this way, but it could be 16 city 20 hwy, about what an S10 4 door gets.might even go with 235/75/15's on alloys, etc.
my point is not to turn it into a offroader, just a truck i love with my own touches and less wieght to help the gas bill.I spend $20 a week now as I work 4 kms from home and walk to go shopping as its 1 block away, so $20 a week in gas for getting to and from work is okay by me, it was $15 a week in my 1992 S10 blazer.

thanks for the pics man, i searched forever and didnt see those, great pics to follow when i get started with my chopping

I think if I can get 17 city all the time, maybe 18.I will be happy. My 4x4 wasnt working and it turned out to be the thermal axle actuator, so I took it out, pulled the rod out with pliers, crimped it into the out position and put it back in, now the snow is gone.So I pulled it out today again, and snapped the end part off, shouldnt need 4x4 for another year, but when i do im planning to use a small aluminum rod until i can get a cable setup happening so i can shut it on and off without climbing under the front of the truck.only takes about 2 or 3 minutes to switch over, and i can still shut off the transfer case, but the fron axles are locked and my gas mileage took a big hit because for a week i drove in semi 4x4 fulltime mode.$20 barely got me to work and back for the 5 work days, it did.But I didnt like how low the tank was getting for the fuel pump cooling.Although it has been cold here so im thinking the gas in the tank is colder than if it had been summer, in which case i wont need 4x4 at all anyways.I dont offroad, just love blazers and chevs in general.

there is more pics of that one here:

Umm, yes, there are. ;) I should know, as Slosh.com == me :D I picked the handful I found most useful.

The thermal actuators are famous for going bad, and you have some options. [I mean, DUH, it's often cold when you need 4x4, you know?]

One is to go to the dealer, where they sell you a replacement unit that's electromechanical or something, an entirely different design, but still electrically activated. Pricey though.

Another is to do a little googling; there's an aftermarket cable acutator. Purely manual, obviously, but certainly gives you positive indication of whether it's activated.

Chevrolet F--ked up bigtime not building that!

Sweet!

You and I think that. :)

The 99% of actual, normal end users who never took the top off and bitched when they leaked, were costing the General a chunk of change to make the thing... plus I don't even want to think about safety considerations, crash testing, etc.

::shrug:: what can a man do, save whip out the sawzall and the welder and DIY :)

oh dremu that your site?
thats cool..
is that your convertible tahoe aswell?

you know a few months back I came across your site at work when i was sitting at my desk looking at blazers HAHAHA..atleast i think it was your site, set up the same and i was reading the chalet stuff on it...cool site

ive had quite a few blazers, a 74, a 88, a couple 79', couple 78's, a 77, a 82, a 87, and a few others, 3 or 4 s10's, 73 4x4 suburban, now my 1992 blazer. It had been something i drooled over for years and dreamed of having one, but money was never there until i found this one.

thanks for the help dremu, ive sent those pics to another guy and a link to the site, he has a 93 he was thinking of selling, but might not, so i tried to get him inspired... ;) the possibilities

i have the start to a site, but mostly its just a place for me to collect things for the future when i need them again...when i find a really good useful forum that deals with the problems or answers questions for me i stick it on my site for later...
id love to start a collection of 92-99 blazer/tahoe fullsizers...they seem to be really cheap in my area these days ... which is good for me i suppose :)

sorry i forgot, my site is kowalko.com, not much to it yet though
