:( I just aquired this 93 Suburban. The transfer case engages and turns the front drive shaft but the front wheels will not engage. Also lights on the transfer shifter panel does not come on. Fuse is good. What should I look at? 136k on this vehicle.:frown1:

Thanks I'll open up the hubs and have a look. What i've been reading manuals is the way to go anyway. Anybody have any part numbers or recomendations for manual hubs. This truck will be for sale if anyone wants it. $6500.

Check the thermal acuator on the front axle. There are no "4x4 hubs" on a Chevy IFS truck... The thermal acuator uses heated gas to engage the front axle and with age the gas escapes and the acuator doesnt work...

And when it goes one of the visible symptoms is that the lights on the shifter do not come on.

Part replaced and back in 4X4

The part just screws right out. Picked up another one at Napa for $84.95 and put it back in. Lights come on and I went and drove over a snow bank to test.
Thanks for the help.

You can also get a posi lock 4x4. It's a cable you put in the cab, so instead of relying on the actuator, you just pull the cable to engage the disconnect. More reliable than an actuator will be. Just over $100 and they have it on www.4wheelparts.com
